Serbian War Leader Arrested for Genocide

Ratko Mladic, the former Bosnian Serb general arrested last week on genocide charges, may be extradited to the tribunal at The Hague in the next four days, say Serbian officials.

The officials said delaying tactics by defence lawyers could not put off the extradition beyond the end of the week. Mladic's lawyer, Milos Saljic, filed an appeal on Monday against his extradition to the war crimes tribunal at The Hague, sending it by post in the hope of slowing the process.

Court officials will need to wait for the document and review it before moving forward with the case.

According to Belgrade press reports, lawyers acting for Mladic's co-accused, the former Bosnian Serb political leader Radovan Karadzic, attempted a similar ploy after he was arrested two years ago. But the appeal was lost in the post and Karadzic was extradited five days later.

Saljic has asked for a battery of doctors to examine his client and said he would argue that Mladic was not in a fit state to stand trial. "His health is in an alarming state; he must be examined by cardiologists, neurosurgeons, orthopaedists, gastroenterologists," he said.

Meanwhile, the Serbian government denied that Mladic's arrest had been the result of a secret deal with the west to ensure the country's eventual membership of the EU.

Im surprised there are still people standing up and protesting for this man... surely anyone who is in charge of mass cleansing is a demon... no matter what your beliefs.

cleansed??? thats the way Mladic and his generals below him may have spoken of such matters, but from what I know, from what I saw, it was genocide. My very earliest memory of traumatic carnage was a video, taken by some of Mladic's troops, when they razed srebeniza to the ground. I was but a nipper, and i met the BBC warning of 'some viewers may find this distressing' with eagerness to know what could lay ahead...well, the video that followed, taken by a serbian troop under the command of Mladic, was of scores of men, and boys, i mean teenagers, as well as men who I considered at the time so old, that surely they could never be seen as a threat, in terms of military matters. The soldiers were laughing and joking, as they lined up these 'men', and executed them, one by one, laughing as one of the other men holding a video camera, ran out of battery. It has always stuck with me, that video, and only since I have grown older and more worldly, has it gained understanding in my volatile soul. To add to that, during my studies of What The Fuck IS Going ON, I have learned more of what happened in the former Yugoslavia. And I have met Serbians, perhaps no more than 10, but who all have a harrowing lack of empathy, not just towards the kosovans, and croations, but in general. Indeed, 10 is a small number, and nowhere near enough to judge a race in its entirety, but my peceptions of these people, that I have met, find no problem in marrying my perceptions of Mladic and the Serbs who follow him. They ARE to me, the modern day nazis of europe.

Anyone who believes that Mladic has been hiding, and the Serbian authorities had no idea where he was hiding, are...likely to have a happier existence than yours truly but unruly. For this man, is a hero to many Serbs...A man who definitely presided, made damn sure it happened, the slaughter of thousands of innocent lives. He is the purest form of Scum I know of, if we exclude the White House, and the Knesset, and all of Africa, focus just on europe.

Serbia wants to become part of the EU...for purely financial reasons. Yet if I was King of England, I would take our forces out of iraq, out of afghanistan, out of all the other foreign realms where we have troops, and...my first port of call, for the combined masses, would be Serbia. And ANYONE, who could be proven to have protected Mladic, who supported the genocide, would be killed, and their children. Their bloodlines ended.

so, your solution would to wipe out the sympathisers, and their families? I kind of hope you never gain any real position of power, my friend. not with extremist ideals like that.

I would likely, if ever thrust into such a position, make other moves to deal with the bloodlines...though they would be watched, and attempts would be made to dilute such evil bloodlines. Perhaps that is a more pleasant and honourable solution.
