I was reading a month ago or so about how watching TV makes normal humans intuitions completely fucked up. When a person watches someone (whether it be TV, in real life etc. etc..) they are subconsciously taking in all of their body language signs. Now since we know that acting is barely what one would consider real, they are portraying false body languages to everyone watching. Since MOST psychologists say that most of communication is 90% body language and 10% verbal (give or take), then that means that a person who regularly watches TV (ESPECIALLY those who do it more than communicate in a real life social environment) will lose their ability to act upon the body languages and cue more on the verbal part. So basically what I read was saying that the more TV and movies and shit that you watch, the less ability you will have to communicate as easily and effectively in a real life environment because your subconscious becomes almost confused to basic every day body signals.

Now how is this such a bad thing? Well... I shouldn't even have to answer that if you've read what I said, people who are actively involved in TV are way more likely to be unable to pick up certain pieces of body language that makes a conversation and everything else flow like it should.

Now what is there to learn of this? If you watch TV, you become less 'in tuned' with your self because you're subconsciously taking in ACTORS (something no one can NOT do) reactions and body language which is NOT REAL, will deteriorate the ability to communicate as effectively as people who do not.

Now since I read that, I've severely cut down my television watching, I'll barely watch TV at all anymore unless it's a good movie or a comedy standup almost purely for the reason that I realized how much negative influence it has on my mind

btw I didn't watch the video so I may be completely off topic or just kind of repeated what he says

actually, modern reality takes over here.
There is no more standard body language. For example.
When someone stands in a cue, in a shop, they might feel nervous or guilty for whatever reason.
By standard, they would start looking around for people watching them, and start shifting stance very often.
Now, same scenario, this person reaches for their cellphone. Either because of above mentioned reasons, boredom or whatever.
This is not tought by tv, but rather evolutionizing instinct.
This is just an observation, but if tv really affects people, they need to be helped individually.

Gotta disagree with you man, but only because we are talking about two different things, body language is mainly consistent with all humans. I'm guessing you're talking about the study (or video) that shows people going in to elevators where there are 2-3 actors who do some sort of movement (everyone turns around, everyone takes their hats off, everyone turning at once. It's not the same thing I'm talking about, since it's deeper than that. When people react to things like that, it's more so that they can adapt to social conformity. People don't like to be out of place and follow the crowd in fear of being the outcast (which would be called a sheep, as most humans are sadly) Now it's funny because almost everyone who watches experiments or reads about them almost always say that it wouldn't happen to them if they were in that situation... well, no.. according to studies you would be a very rare percent that wouldn't follow things like that.

What I'm talking about is BODY language..I'll give an example I know most of you have read where it involves lying and eye movements.. so lets say a normal person lies, generally their eye movement will go to the left (instead of the right, depending on which dominant hand you are) to creatively produce an image that they can speak about. Lets get even deeper, they might fidget a little more than normal, or their tone of voice goes a little out of whack. The eye movement which I know has been showed on here many times, is a very basic form of NLP (neuro linguistic programming).. I'll provide another example of communicating through body language

If a person has low confidence in a 1 on 1 conversation, they tend to have a quieter voice as most people know.. but what goes deeper is that they also might not make any eye contact (a sign of low confidence, or lying), and they also start fidgeting a little because of nervousness (again, like in lying), or even the style that the person is sitting.. They all are different body cues that goes along with our day to day communication that most people will never even think about, or try to study.. but why not? It's ALL done subconsciously, where we are not actively aware of any of it happening until someone points it out to us, or we discover it on our own.

Now to get back on topic, if a person watches TV all the time, they won't subconsciously pick up as many of those body cues because it is foreign to themselves and what they are used to, and it almost throws them off because of it. Now I am not talking about people who watch a little bit of TV, I'm talking about more of the people who spend a few hours every single day watching television with little social interaction OR little kids who don't have built social skills on intuition and are more on the 'learning' scale in their life where they pick up those little things more than older people.

BUT the reason why it hasn't been as noticed that much until more recently is because there haven't been many deep studies involving NLP and the effects that TV/visually false realities has on the human mind until very recently. I would say yes that they would need individual help as you said to get themselves back in to 'reality' so to speak. Why don't people do it though? It's not very understood yet, and most people simply do not care enough to change themselves in that way. The best way to do it though is to just simply stop watching nearly as much TV.

Also, the lying thing that I was talking about is a kind of bad example because lots of people have forced self taught themselves on how lying works so they can get around it themselves, since a HUGE percent of humans lie a lot (and it creates a HUGE negative image of themselves if they get caught) so they practice it more than other forms of deeper communication.

If I can find it, I'll link you guys to the psychology experiment that gets very deep in to this as I only have a small grasp of it and may have made it slightly confusing.

What I learned from that study though, is that I am NOT going to let my child watch much TV at all when he/she is very young kid

I have to agree that television and movies have skewed my own personality in bits and pieces. I'm quite the encylopedia of quotes, impersonations, and body movements of some of my favorite shows.

I don't think it's completely transformed me into something fake and that I act out my life as if I'm in a show or on stage. I just feel it leads way into conversations, finding commonality with others, and making people smile and laugh at some of my impersonations.

TV is like anything else. Too much is bad for you. But I would never shut it out of my life entirely.

Computer games don't affect kids. I mean, if Pac-Man had affected us as kids, we would all be running around darkened rooms, munching magic pills, and listening to repetitive electronic music.

But like...psychologically...on a nationwide basis....Tv is the biggest ruiner.

If you watch it a lot....It can rot your brain worse than any drug.
