A volunteer cleaning the Shawsheen River in Lawrence on Monday pulled from the water a garbage bag containing about two pounds of marijuana, according to the Lawrence Police Department.
Inside the bag were some plants and some marijuana already broken up and put into baggies, said Chief John Romero. He also said that there seemed to be clippings of some other plant, though he wasn’t certain what it was because the evidence hasn’t been analyzed.
“It looks like a concerned relative might have found [the marijuana], tossed it in a bag, and tossed it away,” said Romero, stressing that was just one of many possible scenarios.
The bag was found by Rocky Morrison, a volunteer cleaning the Shawsheen River at 3:17 p.m. It was initially turned over to the Methuen police before it was decided that it was within Lawrence’s jurisdiction, he said.
Romero estimated that there were about 2 pounds of low-grade marijuana that appeared to be homegrown and were still dry inside the garbage bag. He estimated the street value to be around $2,400.
Romero said the matter is under investigation.
