I dont grow yet and im new to growing what doesnt make sense to me is why you have to keep lights on for 18 hours. When in the wild these plants wouldnt never get that much sunlight?

thats only to keep them in a vegetative growth state, meaning no bud gets produced just more leaves and stalk. sometimes people do that cause 18 hours or even 24 hours will make your plant grow faster/bigger until you want to flower it. weed plants are meant to grow in nature where they only requre 12/12, cause it will do the same thing they just flower at the proper time

The change in season reduces the hours of sunlight that a plant gets and kicks it into fruiting, with indoor grows your light cycle tricks into thinking the season has changed.
