alright, i take this class called 'woodworking' at school, and i often get bored when i'm ahead of the group, so i decided to start making my own pipe. just curious at for burning it etc.
how would i protect it against the wet, flame, heat etc.? is it as simple as applying the neccessary amount of coats of varnish?
varnesh is always good, but the inside of the bowl will develope a natural 'cake' which acts as the heat proofing, the cake consists of the tar/ash/burnt wood, and all the other stuff from smokin, and it developes over time, and this provides good heat protection, it is usualy black and quite dry (dont let it get to think tho, otherwise you start smokin the 'cake' and it reduces bowl size...
if you dont want to wait for this (tho it dnt take long) or if u dont want to risk it (it depends what wood you are using, i suggest a high grain density wood for pipes, they got better resistance to burnin)
but another one which is popular among pipe smokers is to get a 50:50 honey:water mix, and smear this on the inside of the bowl, and allow it to try, this provides some protection against burnin, n causes the formation of a 'cake' also, just not one includin burnt wood, it also provides a bit of extra flavour to the smoke (at least the first coupla sesh's anyway) some smokers prefer havin the extra taste, some dont, you can get away withit either way, but cover the outside with varnesh, i wudnt recoment covering inside the bowl withit, but you can, after the cake is formed, all is cool
be careful your not caught makign pipes in class. at my school they threaten the kids in the art and woodclasses what will happen them if they are caught making pipes or bongs.
this is my third year with this teacher, hes cool. if he'd caught me i'd get in sh*t, but he wont. Ive done many things in that class without him seeing. and besides, i have alot of equipment at my house too, so i work on it here as well..
