Day-care worker accused in rape says 4-year-old was willing partner

NEW YORK -- The teacher's aide accused of raping a 4-year-old at a Queens day care center told authorities she thought the boy was a willing partner, while at the same time saying she knew what she did was wrong, prosecutors said in court yesterday.

"It seemed to her that the complainant knew what he was doing," Assistant District Attorney Dianna Megias told a judge at Khemwattie Bedessie's arraignment in Criminal Court in Kew Gardens. "The child is extremely traumatized and his parents are devastated," the prosecutor said.

After her arrest, Bedessie told police that "she knew that what she had done was wrong but that she couldn't help herself and that she never had these feelings before January," Megias told Judge Mary O'Donoghue.

After her arrest on Wednesday, Bedessie, 37, of South Ozone Park, told investigators she abused the boy at least three times between early January and mid-February in the teacher's bathroom at Veda's Learning World in Richmond Hill, police said.

Bedessie molested the boy while she alone watched 14 children at the day care center between 7 and 9 a.m., before other workers arrived, and also as the teachers ate lunch between noon and 1 p.m., prosecutors said.

O'Donoghue ordered Bedessie held without bail on one count of first-degree rape, six counts of first-degree sexual abuse and one count of endangering the welfare of a child.

If convicted, Bedessie faces up to 25 years in prison.

Once a fruit vendor in Guyana, Bedessie immigrated to New York in 2001 and has worked at Veda's, on 128th Street in Richmond Hill, for five years, according to her mother and her attorney.

The attorney, Robert Lucks, told the judge that Bedessie denies the allegations and that any statements to investigators could prove unreliable because police ignored her request to speak with a lawyer.

Lucks also said that while the "allegations are shocking," it's hard to believe that they could have happened without any other adult knowing.

"That my client could somehow sneak away and engage in this activity in this small home is just incomprehensible," he said.

Yesterday, no one was at the day care center, where parents had been told Wednesday that it would be closed indefinitely.

A spokesman for the city Department of Health and Mental Hygiene said the center's license was last renewed in September and that it had received no complaints about the facility before Bedessie's case.

Well its true, theese perverts never get along enough sentence. When they've gotton out for good behavior after 4 years, whats the first thing they do? They molest another child. It's sick and I think the sentence should be life, or death depending on the sicko.
