Try to back up all your files if you can, And you have to do the nasty. You have to delete everything off the hardrive and start over new.
There could be other options, But thats the one i know of. But its good to do it once in awhile anyways. Gets shit off you dont want on there in the first place.

yeh thats great unless the virus is in one of the files u back up and put on ur newly cleaned harddrive, only to find its all been a waste of time.
download the updates for norton, and make sure u have the latest version (2006 i think now?)
if not, try ad-aware. sometimes that can pick up viruses, especially ad related ones obviously.

^ i always gotta say that when someone says somthings wrong with their comp
.
There are a couple of things you could do before you re-format.
First of all can you tell us more about your computer? ram, processor ect..
Secondly, download these programs.
Ad-Aware SE Personal Edition 1.06

Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.4

update the programs after installing, and run

somthing alike happend to my computer a little while back and i manged to get an HP (hewlett packard) recovery disk from the store i bought it. all i had to do was pop a cd in and it asked a few questions then it takes all the files and erases them then installs them again and then its like when you first bought your computer. so possibly try to find somthing like it from where you bought it or else do what i do and find a friend who's very good at computers and smoke a joint with them iff they fix your computer
"Why drink and drive while you can smoke and fly?"

one more reason to switch to linux lol. Just expressing my opinion, its easier to use and much more stable. and there are VERY few virus for linux, and its easy to recover when you do get one. not saying you have to do the same.
(Go here if you decide to switch - download for FREE!)

But chances are your going to stick with windows, so the only thing you really can do is backup->format->reload
But you say its downloading/installing new programs? chances are its adware. In that case the very first thing to do is go to "run" and type "MSCONFIG". then go to the startup tab and deselect any items that may appear to be malicious. then restart, and uninstall any unfamilar/suspicious software (check with other users first so yu dont piss someone off by deleting something important). Next, open task manager and go to the "processes" tab and kill any malicious programs running. Now, do like 13laze suggested and download adaware and get the latest def and run a full scan and delete all suspicious items. Now to be safe, update nortaon antivirus and run a full scan. restart and if its still bitched up, then either a)you didnt do it right / everything or b)its a virus and your fucked.
