Will there be an NHL season in 2005?
I don't know how many of you here follow hockey at all, but I thought this would be an interesting subject.
Truth be told, I don't really follow hockey that closely. I have a favorite team and I watch probably 20 regular season games and usually all of the playoffs.
No hockey this year was pretty weird. There's nothing better that getting a nice buzz on with beer or weed and watching Hockey Night in Canada. I really missed that this year.
I honestly don't know if the NHL and the NHLPA will work things out and get the 2005 season rolling on time. I hope they resume talks over the summer and come to an agreement.
So, what's everyone else's opinions?

Yeah word is that they're almost reached a decision and should do so later this week. That's freakin awesome, I never started drinking regularly till like last september and I was looking forward to getting a little buzz on while watching the game with friends.cutthecashflow wrote:Someone told me just yesterday that there will be a season in 2005 anyone else here anyting about it?

so how do you people feel about this "new" nhl?
to me it seems like they will slowly take away most of the more traditional defensive tactics and transform the game into a more offensive minded game. that will probably bring up new defensive tactics and players will have to make use of other tactics that they never used as often. usually the smart thing to do was play the man, and the bad defensemen would play the puck. now its the other way around, as playing the man will most definately lead to a penalty. thats another thing, there are too many power plays, and although theyre fun to watch, it gets tiresome and becomes something regular. that plus the game now relies more on special teams rather than the real core of the game which is traditionally 5 on 5. with the way the league is now, bruising defensive dmen cant use the skills that always made them so usefull, and so an offensively gifted dman seems to be more important than a defensive guy. basically you could just shift a forward to play dman and learn some of the things about positioning in the new game.
some of the things that i like are that they increased the offensive zones, making more room to set up on the power play and keep the puck in offensive position. utilizing the point-men should be a lot more useful now and i think its showing so far as defenseman are ranked a lot higher in points at the moment compared to previous years (although all around offensive stats are up compared to recent years). it looks like the league might actually get a d-man with over 30 goals this year. also decreasing the size of the goalie gear was a good idea so that no goalies can take advantage of huge equipment saving their asses on a bad reflex or poor coordination. no more two-line pass rewards players that have really nice pass acuracy and leads to seeing some great passes threading the needle onto a far away players stick for a breakaway. plus the neutral zone wont be as clogged as it was before.
it seems to me that the nhl will slowly keep changing the game, each time making subtle changes so that they dont anger most of their hardcore fans or fans of what they consider traditional hockey, and at the same time they gain more casual fans and people who like to cheer for a team more than they like watching any hockey game for the sake of watching hockey. these changes will eventually lead to something more similar to a game like basketball, being no contact. and that will leave other traditional physical leagues out there to be considered "dirty" leagues for people who "cant play hockey".
id like to say that i hope the reshaping of the NHL doesnt reshape the image of what traditional ice hockey is, but the game of hockey was invented so long ago and it seems to be different in leagues all over the world. it has probably already been changed to what i now see as "traditional hockey" (hard hitting, offensive AND defensive tactics, fighting for the sake of the team or a certain player).
