South East Asia earthquake

JAKARTA, Indonesia - The world's most powerful earthquake in 40 years triggered massive tidal waves that slammed into villages and seaside resorts across Asia on Sunday, killing more than 3,000 people in five countries.

i was thinking it was bad enough in the Uk over christmas with 3people(probably more)been muredered over christms eve/christmas day. i think it was 2 stabbings andone shooting. neway thispaled intoinsignificance when i saw this news about the tidal wave.savage.

national emergency's been declared here as well.. three of our southern states have been badly hit..though not as bad as Sri Lanka and the Maldives...

Dont mean to be trivial, but the island where the movie The Beach was shot is now completely underwater...

My dad lives in Kuala Lumpa in malaysia which is 200 miles away from the nearest coast and he was gonna go to the coast for christmas but everywhre was booked up. Thank god for that

Last I heard was 23 000

My best friend is from sri lanka and some of her family members (her uncle survived but his family aka her aunt and cousins got swept away).. Her family has been crying for the past two days for their country and their people.. everyone feels helpless.
I'm still shocked at all of it..

God bless all those affected. My friends mum and boyfriend were in south-east India but apparently a fisherman warned them. They got to high ground in time luckily. Shame about the other 20,000 or so

That's such a huge number to represent human loss....

So many families grieving tonight.

I wonder how they died - from drowning? But how, exactly? Swept out to sea? Knocked out when the wave hit (ironic way to drown) or maybe they were inside and the rooms filled up with water. I wonder why so many more died in Sri Lanka. What happened to those people? Why did they have to die.

I've been watching this very closely with my best friend. So far they cannot find her aunt and cousins so it's a horrible christmas for everyone in their family.
People got knocked around, pulled under water, etc.

The water is incredibly strong, it broke through windows and so much, so easily. A lot of the deaths are elderly people and children because they weren't strong enough to hold on to anything, they simply got pulled away.
There will be far more than 50 000 dead. Imagine the bodies they have not even found yet and the ones that are in critical condition now that may die.
The disease and contamination that will come from this will be devastating. I donated $200 to UNICEF. I will soon be going out to pick up donations with my friend around my town even though it's -50 for fux sake it's necessary.
Horrible that this happens to the poorest countries. It's the last thing sri lanka needs..

I heard about an australian couple that were eating breakfast when the water burst into their restaurant and they got separated from their 16 year old mentally handicapped son.

Even if he survived, they don't know how he'd communicate with anyone.

Again, my best friend was just there this summer and there was a long myth about a certain area (I forget the name) but it is where The Beach was filmed (uhm.. leonardo dicaprio n shit). Her mother brought her to see it even though it was a 3 hour trip to get there from where they were staying in sri lanka because her mother insisted it would be her last chance to see it (according to the myth). Well now it's gone. Swept away completely.
