I'm just a li'l high and could only think of one thing to contribute to this topic.

I'm sure you've all noticed how insanely busy grocery stores and department stores get the day before they close for a holiday. (Today is Canada Day, so that could be why I'm thinking this way.)

I can certainly forgive people for going out to get their staples (bread, milk, diapers, beer), but people act as if the world is coming to an end and they won't be able to get more stuff for months on end. It's one day, people! I'd wager a guess that a large percentage of North American homes have enough food within to last 24 hours without people starving to death!

And, yes, the world is coming to an end. I used to believe myself, and many generations beyond me would never live to see that day...now I'm not so sure.

Alright I agreed with you partially and now your just playing with my words in the wrong way. My words are as I meant them and you didn't get it.. What I said would be able to describe EXACTLY what you just said. An example of looking in a bigger perspective is 'we live on the smallest speck of dust in the universe' (even though I can say how you are completely wrong on that if you're talking as literal as you're trying to make it.) And I'll go there..

Bigger: large or big relative to something else

It's a comparison to something else.. not hard at all to define.

Progress will benefit some, yet not others. I ask of you this.
With all of our current technology, if a solar storm occurred that wiped out all telecommunications, all networks and all digital technology, modern humans would be fucked. 3rd world humanity would be rather untouched. I suppose this could be a cleansing, and that demonstrates our weakness that we have grown to suck on the supple nipple of technology to a state of frenzied abuse and addiction.

Fair point. I'm sure there are plenty of ways that our electronic-dependent society could come to a complete halt. And if it did, it would be an incredibly onerous, and possibly impossible task to rebuild life and order as we knew it before the crisis. And we would surely exhaust every physical and human resource in order to do so. I don't think there is any way that it would be a cleansing or purification of our race... We would restore our lives as we knew them as best we could or die trying... Riots, Looting, and general chaos would be the new order of things. Anarchy. Exciting thought in some ways... Bah, anyway.... Let's think of our alternatives though, as well as the fact that we are already too far-gone to live simply again, as we used to... It does no good to complain about the fact that we are now dependent on tech. It's too late to go back to hunting and gathering. Too late to go back to farming and bartering. So, intuitively, since we know for a fact that we cannot go back, why not go forward? What's the benefit of staying still? I can't think of one... It's not safe (economically, socially) and it contradicts our very nature. Our market depends on tech and tech depends on science. We need to keep crusin.

We have yet to figure out why, and it doesn't seem to play with the physics we have come to know. And dark matter/energy? That doesn't play with our physics either. Beyond that, what about trying to find a unifying theory or ... relativity, i suppose. Physics that govern small matter dont play by big matter rules, and vice versa.

They do play by the same rules, those rules simply have different effects on different things. That's the whole idea behind basic physical laws as well as a unified theory. I don't think we know a whole lot about dark matter or energy just yet. At least as far as its origin, purpose, and strange properties when juxtaposed. I think our overall understanding of the physical world could benefit from more observation of the universe concerning dark matter and energy. The LHC could help with that... So what do you think man, should we keep at it?

The real problem is that we stoped to evolve because of technolgy.
it only makes our brain more of a slacker than it already is.

Technology is all about comfort and security - it has nothing to do with evolution.
Technologies will not enlight us on what we really are and what's our purposes, it blinds humanity like love blinds a young woman.

i'm not saying we do not need technologies and high-tech stuff. we should just think about ''how usefull will it be for the whole humanity'' Out of good money incomes for the company who creates the product.

I personally could live without it if everyone would do it.
Instead of chillin in front of the tv, or talking via msn - or just texting everyone who exists, people would just.. literally meet and exchange their knowledges.
wich is what evolution is all about.
Now we exchange people's knowledge and talents for money... instead of giving them what we know and what we can do back.
Money is a huge barrier between people and evolution.

When a star is created. it's the beauty of the elements working togheter to create one single goal. they all evolve into a star without ''thinking'' - it's done because it's how it works in universe, everything got to evolve.
Just how the whole planet has been created is elements working togheter.
First plants that appears, bringing oxygen to make first fish appears, that, when they will die, it will create new plants to create more life..etcetc.
it's all subconscious, instinct, it works togheter without asking if they have to do it.

We, human, have a conscience and our generation has been bullshited like never ever.
We need to evolve consciously... wich we don't do and wich we won't do until we're all out because there's a conscious effort to do
out of evolving togheter, we like to watch tv, spend 8hours shifts days at work, lose time on computer and contemplating the awesome technology that breaks our race appart.

technolgy makes our consciousness lazy... they used to calculate every ingredient and they knew how to do it.
nowaday, we have tools to mesure everything instantly and all instruction are into a recipe book.

we have no experience at all.. really.
technlogies does not really help us anymore as we really depend of it as it is actually on earth.

For those reasons, I'm hoping that 2012 will be an enlightenment, rather than utter destruction, but for the human species, it's almost certain that we will have to have worldwide catastrophe to get people to wake the fuck up and realise everything.

It's funny, technology allows us to become so much more "educated" and "knowledgable" yet at the same time, we lose our knowledge and instincts for technology wipes out the need for them. People become stupid as fuck because they rely on technology to do everything. Hell, i'm guilty there. I don't know how to do shit for math because I just use calculators....

Yeah, you're definitely right. At this point, there isn't really a turning back. We've crossed the event horizon, we must trudge forward or suffer an extreme worlwide change.

But they don't! I can't remember very many specifics, (i'm sure we could find a great video on TED.com explaining...) but for example. Atoms, electrons and all that makes them up is so small that there is no way they could be held together, for they are so small they shouldnt have a relative gravity...

^I very much understand that money and power is the way the world is run, Animal. I'm not talking of our immediate and irreversible systems of government or economics. And as such, I have little interest in such things. I'm talking of science. Human life is a scientific process. A learning process. We are doomed to have many egregious problems because of our imperfections. We are eventually doomed to fail altogether by the very nature of life and the universe. I'm not talking about elitism, propriety, or money in any sense save for perhaps discussing government spending concerning scientific research and exploration. I'm not looking for anything concerning broad, perpetual human conflict. I'm talking of nothing but scientific discovery, exploration, and exploitation.

You cannot talk of scientific discovery, exploration and exploitation, without appreciating and understanding what drives those areas, for they need $, not just bright, inquisitive, capable minds. I am as much a doom-monger as I am an idealist and fantasist. And i am sure there are thousands of scientists extremely eager to break new ground, to solve riddles, to find solutions to problems which have bothered them and our species as a whole for many moons. However, to do so, they need funding, and funding, in a truly altruistic sense, is extremely rare. Lets say a scientist comes up with a massive breakthrough, which could change humanity for the better. He will be found out. And if his discovery threatens the interests of ultra powerful people, he will br crushed, killed, and his research...consumed and hidden. buried...This is why I say that ALL scientific discovery, exploration and exploitation is geared towards, governed by, financially focused, not altruistic characters and groups. The stranglehold that the elite have over EVERYTHING is phenomenal and impossibly hard to circumnavigate. I am not talking of conspiracies, I am talking of reality...
