Re: The Random Topic
Ahh man i love to wake n' bake. I'm so high on one hit, last night it took like 3 hits to feel anything...
Also, maybe it's just me, but whenever i'm high, there seems to be something about Dan's words, the way he writes, that's just really... awesome.

Did anyone ever consider that the reason moths chuck themselves at the moon is cause they're secretly building a civilization on the moon and plotting a hostile takeover of Earth once they've advanced far beyond us? Just a thought...

I see you're still the same existential mystic I remember from back in the day.
You fell off the grid a while ago, what's up man ?

Computer games don't affect kids. I mean, if Pac-Man had affected us as kids, we would all be running around darkened rooms, munching magic pills, and listening to repetitive electronic music.

Anyone know any good RECENT articles on cannabis, cannabis legalisation, prostitution, or any drug legalisation that also is involving TAXATION? I can't stress enough they need to be both recent and to do with tax. It would help too if they were from a media site, or something reliable rather than another forum as such. I know it's a bit of a long shot but any help would be great help.

Re: The Random Topic
^^^ I have to write a report on social and economic benefits of 'Negative' taxing, or 'Pigovian' taxing... but i wanted to contrast it with the idea that it can generate large revenue figures which could be helped to ease austerity measures. Couldn't find much on anything illegal unfortunately, but got a cracker on gambling.
In the UK, the top gambling and betting firms are avoiding around £250 million a year in taxes via offshoring to tax havens on internet and telephone bets. If we were to increase our laws on tax avoidance then (especially gambling, which has higher tax rates... that's why i went for something pigovian rather than the obvious starbucks scandal) then that equates to £1bn since 2009.
This is just but one point however... and there are as many against it as there are for it, so I'm middle ground and hold very little a position on it at all.

Re: The Random Topic
I firmly believe that HMRC should be cracking down on these corporate giants (i.e. Starbucks, amazon etc plus, as you say, the giants of the gambling industry and many more) and their accountancy companies (KPMG, Ernst & Young, Deloitte's etc.) in order to acquire the correct and fair amount of corporation tax which they have avoided payment, and also to prevent these tax avoidance schemes from happening on such a grand scale in future. The only problem is, as has been said by many key figures in the City, if we begin to clamp down on corporation taxes then it's likely that we'll see a sharp decline in the amount of investment making its way in to Britain. We'll no longer be seen as a competitive market for business (sorry, 'Even less competitive', considering the corporate tax rate of other countries). however, this should not be seen as a deterrent. It would take a year or 2 for companies to realise how much revenue they're missing out on by choosing not to operate in the UK, then they'd slowly start to trickle back in with their tales between their legs because, no matter how much money or market control these companies have, they always need a little more...leprechaun wrote:...Couldn't find much on anything illegal unfortunately, but got a cracker on gambling.

These links are great!, especially considering they both give $47 million as their figures, so it should be pretty reliable.weedguru_animal wrote:http://www.denverpost.com/news/marijuan ... o-industry

As for the report, it's nothing major, just a wee short 500 word one to break us in on tax, it's not gonna marked... though i do like to try. I'll let youse have a wee juke at it anyways when i put all the findings together. I'm still taking a middle ground stance at the minute, which i think is good. Though, it's not exactly an issue that anyone likes..... especially i find Americans have more of a problem with taxes, though this could just be me stereotyping.
As for the above post.... I like how you've laid down both sides, most people tend to just get worked up about one. Pricewaterhouse, the other accounting firm was getting an absolute grilling the other day by the Public Accounts Committee (on a side note, i can't help but always wonder if the guy that runs this refers to himself as 'PACman').
The only problem is, you've made quite equally good arguments for each side of the argument, which shows just how hard it is to debate it..... Though finished up quite well, especially when you consider the Big4 accounting firms, as (if i can remember correctly) last year, mainly because of London's economic strength, the financial sector was responsible for a third of the UK's (or was it just England's) total revenue.

Re: The Random Topic
I'm not too sure whether that was kingdom wide or just England, but it's hardly surprising news. The complete shift of our production from manufacturing to services has been remarkable. I'm gonna keep this brief, as I'm using my phone to write... I don't agree with the way our economy works in a moral manner, but until the collapse of capitalism, we're completely reliant upon it and therefore cannot do much other than to play along. Our economic structure fascinates me. I don't like to get worked up about it, though sometimes I feel nothing but indignation toward the corruption, greed and gluttony which occurs. If you give both sides of the debate the attention they deserve, it's much easier to come to a logical solution.
Did you say you were going for a job with Morgan? How's that going for you?
