Many, many years ago, I worked part-time at a new and used gaming store called Microplay. We used to use that brass cleaner called "Brasso" on a cotton swab to clean the contacts. It really helped, for those who still have an old Nintendo with games.

Oh, to be clear...

Put the Brasso on one end of the Q-tip and swipe the brass contacts on both sides.
Then use the other dry end of the Q-tip to remove the residual leftovers and black gluck that comes off.

Voila!
