Does weed make you smarter?

Weed makes my bf think he is genuis. It annoys the hell out of me when he learns something from a movie or the history channel and a couple days later he tries to "school me" on the topic.

For instance we are both really into learning about how aliens could have possibly ruled the earth in the past. So I bought him the book "Chariots Of The Gods" ..and he hasn't touched it yet. But OHHH..he knows everything there is to know about the subject.

I can see weed making a person a deeper thinker....donno about smarter.

This is where state dependent learning comes into play. If you are high all of the time and you are doing all of your activities high (including school) your body and mind becomes adapted to this routine and associates the state of mind you are in (high) with the activity that you are doing (homework). Through repeated exposure to these circumstances your brain decides that the best way for it to learn is in a similiar context all of the time. That is why when people start or stop smoking weed they have a hard time focusing on things, until their brain can come to terms with a new state dependent learning environment.

It's the same principal when someone who always goes to the bar to play pool, darts, or dance. More often than not we have heard the person say I cant dance until I have a few drinks in me or I'm a much better pool player or foosball player after I have had a few drinks. Their brain is conditioned to learn best in this state dependent evironment because it has been put into that situation a multitude of times in the past.

I used to be the best pool player on campus when I was 19, but only if I smoked a spliff before I went into the pool hall, the shots seemed to line up and my vision was like that straight out of a geometry textbook, but if I wasn't high I wasn't sinking any shots. Since I quit smoking marijuana, due to work related requirements I have lost a lot of my pool skills, some have returned, but my geometric vision has failed to come back. Once Christmas break comes (we get about a month off) I'm going to buy a big bag of grass and return to shooting pool at the bars, it only takes me about a week or two to produce clean piss (which I am very grateful for!).

I agree with this, it is the reason why I learnt to drive whilst stoned, 3 years no accidents (cept when a ring and ride bus drove into the side of me cos they didnt see me but it doesnt count cos i did nothing wrong and there was minimal damage) and one near miss, not a bad track record. If you learn something in a one mind state it will be easier to perform the task you have learnt in that same mind state. As I am pretty much constantly stoned I learnt to drive stoned so it would become natural to me rather than hinder my abilities behind the wheel.

I don't have to smoke weed to want to learn, I want to learn on my own.

it makes you see more. makes you more open to perceiving stuff... So yeah, i'd say it makes you smarter. You learn more. and it makes it easier to learn, you absorb it all.

I can relate to the reading part. Nowadays when I pick up a book I have to smoke first in order to get into it.

I too wanted to investigate this, so I went to my math class in college high and everytime I did I understood the lectures completely and when I had a question about something I felt more confident to ask it right away. I also made straight 100's on my tests and daily assignments.
Now when I ran out of green, and had to go to class I struggled with focus and would get a few problems wrong, therefore I believe it is safe to say that weed opens up your mind to where you are able to use your full focus and brain functions to the highest of its ability, whereas normally we only use 10-20% of our brain functions.
