French is about to disapear because of this, they mix it with english and ruins it 's beauty.... it will be out of the place within the next 50years, montreal will be considered as an english city in 2 years..
Yeah but Canada is a nation with two official languages. Certainly other areas where French is spoken such as France, Belgium and certain cantons in Switzerland would not have children mixing french words with English. It would be interesting to know if any Belgians mix in Dutch with their French and vice versa . I do agree that it ruins its beauty, but it's also kind of a special thing to be able to mix two languages in one sentence and have others understand and acknowledge your words. Canada, and Quebec in particular is a unique place. :stoned2:

As for Montreal being considered any more of an english city than it already is in 2 years, I just don't see this being the case.
Well Chris me and my buddies actually mix Dutch and English all the time, simply because we all like speaking English, so we switch from language to language during conversation, some find it weird.

SO I can definitely imagine people from Brussels (capital region, also dutch & french, mostly french though) using both Dutch and French during conversations.

Unfortunately the more you head towards france the less chance you have that people speak anything but french, lazy cunts, but what are you gonna do huh? :)

And Mate, your English is fine, I don't mind spelling mistakes because I make them all the time!

Quite frankly, it took me a while to get used to Mates method of English and universal rhetoric. hahaha. It is, at this point in time, quite good enough for me to understand him completely.

I find it incredibly interesting that you can flow through a conversation (no pun intended) swapping between languages, Flow. I'd be interested to hear when in the conversation the swap occurs.... Is it when you want to be as descriptive as possible when you speak Dutch? Or is it relatively arbitrary?

Thank you for being as ambiguous as possible. lol

Not to pressure you, but do you notice any specific triggers that prompt a change to or from French?

when i'm speaking in french to Clauda (english) and she doesnt understand 1 specific word, i repeat my sentence in english
and most of the time i continue to speak english... then Max cames from behind saying HI MATE in french, then boom language switch

it can be total random too. just because we feel the sentence we will say will have more impact.

I have a rather billingual life too..My parents are english, my friends are french, my kids are billingual and attend a billingual school. Not only do we speak a combination of both languages in a conversation like Mate says but we also tend to use french and english in the same words and phrases. It's a way I've spoken since elementary school and my kids have also learned it at school. We call it frenglish. The sentence can be in french but words here and there will be totally english words. It's like we replace to words by english when we don't have a better word in french. It even worse than normal quebec french

I cut off the previous quotes because quote pyramids, although fun,are confusing.

And I can understand it must sound strange, it's hard for me to exactly pinpoint why or when we'd change languages. Personally I mingle my English and Dutch so much that, when having a conversation in Dutch with someone else it happens that i'm in the middle of a sentence and then stop, because I forgot how to say something in Dutch, so replace that particular word by it's English form, sometimes I bastardize English words and make them sound Dutch...it's odd.

But I can also say this doesn't happen with everyone I talk to, only people that actually know English can follow me when I switch around so I only do it when the people i'm talking to are comfortable with the English language, my good friends are so it happens that we kick off a conversation in Dutch and then just flip it to English halfway through, I wouldn't say it gets triggered by anything specific, it just happens ...

The best example would be if I recorded us talking, you'd probably understand 50-60% of what were saying until we put in a Dutch sentence, or a partially English one.

For all the words that have been lost in the grains of time, there are new ones coined. I think the excitement of learning or developing new words and/or phrases helps to compensate slightly for that loss. Also I enjoy ressurecting archaic words and phrases every so often when I speak, it can act as a pretty good talking point as well as just being a bit of fun.

People who dont use punctuation or the correct grammar are probably just being lazy, it doesn't mean that they can't do it, they just dont. When I am writing something important I will take time to make sure everything is grammatically correct and there are no mistakes with my work. However when I write texts on my phone or I am on messenger chatting to someone for example, I take much less care and use a fair amount of abbreviations. Which I am more than sure extends to more than just myself. This is something I tie in with western, modern day society's attitude towards time.

Running out of time, times up, time is of the essence, time is money, time out, take your time, giving up your time, have time, half time, wasting time, the end of time, time consuming, killing time. In the western world, particularly since the twentieth century, time has been treated almost as it it were a consumer product, like a limited resource (akin to oil) that will disappear over constant usage. Most people dont tend to notice this, but it actually does affect how people function within their daily lives. You sub-consciously seek shortcuts because the idea of time being a limited resource is so rigourously pounded into your mind that you treat it as such.

Well that my tuppence worth anyway...

Everything was good before money came along.

With money came the notion : "Time is money" and ever since then human beings have been trapped in a rat race working their ass off for 48hours a week instead of just being the animals we are.

I am opposed to all of this, but I alone cannot change a thing.
