How much shit is talked between your friends backs?

This has, though not showing its face just recently, become more of an issue than ever before in my group of friends (..."friends", perhaps?) I've never seen it in any other group of friends, and its becoming seriously fucked.

For ease, we'll assign their names as Ca, Co, Ke, Au and Li. Ca and Co live together while me and Ke live together. Ca's girlfriend is Au, and Li is a mutual friend of all of us.
Co talks shit about Ca because of his "little man" personality (Hes like 5'4 with a BIG ego. you know the type. oh, and hes from texas...) and sometimes his lack of cleaning around the apartment. Ca talks shit on Co for being so serious and being an asshole. I talk shit on Ke because, well, he has no hygiene, and doesn't do a DAMN thing around the apartment (Me and or my girlfriend clean the kitchen, take out the trash, clean the apartment, bathroom, etc etc. while he does NOTHING.) oh, yeah, and a little reason because, though our lease is up in december, he is breaking it early, in August, because he's being shipped out to the military.

I knew about this before we signed the lease, and he agreed that, since the military pays housing allowance, he would pay me that money to uphold his part of rent. Now hes going to break his half of the lease and pocket all that money. So thats why i'm pissed at him. Anyway.

Au has recently began talking shit on Li, for some reason, and all of Ca, Co, Ke and Au talk shit on Li behind her back anyway. I try to stay out of all the shit talking except about Ke because he's doing some fucked up shit with the lease and not helping around "our" apartment.

So I was hanging out with Li today, giving her a ride after she dropped off her car, and told her that last night everyone was talking shit about her and all that. she got pissed, and texted Co, after I dropped her off, "So i make everyone elses problems mine?? Fine, fuck all of you, go to hell, i'm sick of this whole group, have a nice life guys." Co asks me why she may have said that, and I told her its because, well, everyone in our group talks shit on everyone else behind their back, and yeah, i told her that because it was brought up. So now Co is pissed at me, not that any of them really act like much of friends anyway, and now shits really going to hit the fan.

So..... thoughts? Again, never have I seen a group of "friends" talk a TON of shit about each other behind their backs and pretend everything is perfectly fine. WTF

Doesn't seem like this group are what I would call Friends. More...acquaintances of convenience. If anyone is taking from you, giving nothing in return but bullshit, cut them out your loop...

although i do know some groups of "friends" that talk so much shit about each other its crazy
a little is always healthy in a group... but this just sounds like jerry fucking springer...
time to start hanging with some new people man

it sounds like alot of the shit talking stems from the living arrangements.
not all the people that live together should be friends, and not all friends should live together

i think you made the right call telling that girl everyone talks shit about her,
maybe that will act as a catalyst to change how you all act around each other

i think in all friend groups, shit is talked behin eachothers backs. but if u have decent friends then mostly all they will talk about is just ur faults or the annoying things u do. but this is cool as this happens with every group of friends and is not a bad thing

yeah, most of us will talk jokingly, or just talk about things that we know that we probably shouldn't know sometimes. But nothing too serious. I think Dan is right about them being just acquaintances...people who just happen to be there. One of my friends actually had a similar problem, she moved in with a couple of other gals, and all they did was smoke cigs all day (and she only smokes pot, and hates cigs, and asked them numerous times to smoke outside...) they house always reeked, and no one would do the dishes. Basically she lived with a whole bunch of irresponsible people... and she had problems getting along with them. I'm sure there is more to the story that I don't know yet.... but she always felt left out, and whenever they'd go out, she always felt ditched at the end, so the bottom line, she moved out and found a better roomie. Better location too.
