Hey guys. Did you ever get the thought that hobbits loved smoking because they were actually toking the green green grass? If you read the book, you will notice numerous passages dedicated to smoking describing it in detail. I am beggining to guess that Mr. tolkien was a pot head after all

Maybe, but it's news to me. I have just recently started to read these books. The movies really don't make such a big deal about smoking as the books do.

mmm remember they are pretty old books... compared to the new movies which are aimed at both young and mature audiences... i think there would have been a bit of an uproar if jackson had blatantly shown the hobbits
and wizards and warlocks etc getting stoned....
from memory there were a few scenes that hinted at it...

anyone remember these?

remember in the .... second movie i think, were the tower was flooded and the res of the fellowship arrive, and they find merry and pippen smoking out of their pipes, and acting, well, high and they are laughing and eating shit, munchies anyone?, i figure that the producer would have just passed that off as them "being happy that they defated saruman" but to the advocates of green, shuch as ourselves would have knew that they were getting high.

Well if I were a stoner hobbit, there's no way in hell I would be able to carry out any sort of quest. Can you imagine being baked out of your mind and having to deal with goblins and trolls? That shit would totally freak me out and it would be one hell of a bad trip

In the first movie toward the beginning, Bilbo and Gandalf are smoking (this is just before Gandalf blows a 'smoke ship' through Bilbo's smoke rings) and Bilbo comments "Old toby, the finest weed in the Southfarthing." Casual reference my ass.
