There is probably more truth to each of those seemingly ludicrous suggestions than any of you would like to delve deep enough to discover, but for a more relevant view of the new dominant force in Palestinian Politics…..
They are renowned for their militancy and responsible for killing more than 400 Israelis, mainly through suicide bombing, but they are not the single minded suicidal maniacs often portrayed by Western news agencies. Imagine been born into a war zone like the middle East, seeing your brothers defending your family and land against a supremely powerful/oppressive Israeli occupying army…How would you feel? No chance of settling down, no chance of peace, high chance of getting shot or blown up. For many kids, the situation leads them down one path only, which is straight to war. Savage really; To see 10 year olds battle hardened and not expecting to last another day let alone find the time to think about what they’d like to be when they finish school...
The main problem with Hamas is that part of their official charter ‘demands the destruction of Israel’. which doesn’t bode well for peace in the region, especially when we look at the potential for regime change as a successor is sought for the wilting Sharon.
In the past it has been easy to fight for their cause and attack the reigning Fatah big shots, but now Hamas finally find themselves sitting not only at the table(of political might), but also with a large majority and responsibility to do what is best for the many poor/scared and angry Palestinians, who voted them in. So from angry underdogs to prudent statesmen??? We shall see. I'm sure that many of the young Hamas members will be thinking back to those wise words from Spiderman…

The party line will have to be changed pretty quickly, unless the PA(Palestinian authority) want to run out of money and let the country fall into even worse chaos(and I mean serious anarchy)., such is their dependency on charitable contributions mainly from the US/EU which provide (or are supposed to provide) the PA with enough capital to create jobs and sustain some semblance of order and government. This money will be stopped if the ‘WE MUST DESTROY ISRAEL’ aspect of the Hamas Charter and subsequent party outlook, remain the same. Also the tax revenue collected by Israel, I think from the provinces they have stolen/taken by force, which usually go to the PA, will be withheld for similar reasons…
Maybe drastic, but and a compromise will be reached as increased tension in the Palestine is in the best interests of NOBODY who wants to live.
Condi Rice and her adopted father GW BUSH showed shock(to the Hamas victory), but given their constant pursuit of ‘democratic’ elections for developed nations, they should not be surprised when true to form and ideals; a group of people elect a party who might actually make a difference to their own lives..
