how do i change start-up items on windows xp??

Yeh i been trying to work out how to get a couple of things of the start-up list, did look for them in the service.msc place, but couldnt find them......

any ideas??

unless you really know the .msc file system I would not mess with it bro. Try... damn been a while since I used XP... 1st what do you want to change?
2nd to modify startup items more cautiously, go to the startup menu... I think its \documents and settings\(username)\start menu\startup if you go there you will see all the shortcuts for all programs that load everytime windows boots. Dont forget the all useful right click - if you dont know what the hell some icon relates to vis'a'vee (no, I didnt take french) the application, right click the icon and choose properties, and then "find target"

That gnarly services.msc window shows active apps even when you arent logged in (why? example: so your web server continues to function when the welcome screen is shown.

The default choices for what loads and runs is pre-decided by microsoft, you can see whats what in the startup type column. You can really mess things up by double clicking any of these services and choosing to alter its default status from Automatic to Manual or disable it. If you dont know exactly what they do, and *more importantly* how they inter-relate (ie you may think disabling one would be cool, but it may be one that must automatically start in order for another one to function, and effectively hose your applications at a level only more ass-annoyingly possible by going to the Registry and trying to play God there. Dont, really do not, turn the preconfigured load status of these buggers unless you are SURE you know the ramifications, and ALWAYS take a pen, and pad of paper, and write down WHERE you went (registry, or services.msc or whatever, and WHEN you fucked with it, and WHAT you changed. Hopefully you will be able to boot your PC in safe mode and un-fuck it when you realize that this nifty ability is sort of hidden for a reason, that being most people dont need to alter them, and most people cannot figure out the way to fix their mistakes once they reach a point of really being noticable. Especially if you like to dork around with this stuff late at night, after a few beers and bong hits. Thats a recipe for a costly geek-fix unless you have a cool backup like RAID 0+1 or a tape backup or something, and really know your way around the f8 load to safe mode, etc. I recall trying to help you *?* when I was new here - oh so long ago

Anyways, use the Start and Stop buttons on the toolbar of the services window to do either.

WIN.INI files. if you see something like LOAD= or RUN= with a program reference... well we can burn that bridge when we come to it.

Task Manager, when used in ignorance to alter the status of a load app can really, repeat really hose things - again, down to the registry. If you do not know what a startup app does, create a Registry patch of the WHOLE Registry Key in question. If you dont know this means, do not proceed.

I hope this helped. Its been a while, and I am no windows expert, but I think I covered the basics for the questions you asked. Btw, if its the svchost.exe or the services.exe you are thinking about removing from startup, realize that these are the programs responsible for launching processes operating behind the scenes, those very ones controlled by services.msc Under NO CIRCUMSTANCES should you interfere with svchost or you can bring your windows box to its knees.

thanks for the help goo,
and after a mixture f your suggestions and some research i found the msconfig.exe utility which makes changing start-up items easy...

I also added in some prefetch commands to speed up access to my most commonly used applications, and changed some more settings that I cant even remember right now.

clean and defrag the drives

uhh, i think, if you just go to the start menu and go to programs then accessories then system tools then click disk clean up and go back and do the same thing and click disk defrag then that sould speed it up by more than 20%.

damn you beat me! A clean drive, defrag'd regularly, is a great help. If you have XP, I have a few suggestions to further speed your response time up, here are a few tested and approved.
1) tame mindless animation & display settings which slow things down and suck ass
goto control panel/system icon/advanced tab/click settings in the performance section. The visual effects tab has a lot of settings all on by ms default.
Choose "custom" and turn off the following
Fade or slide menus into view
fade or slide tooltips inyo view
fade out menu items after clicks
slide taskbar buttons
smooth-scroll list boxes
use a background image for each folder
use common tasks in folders

OK now for some registry tweaks. DO NOT MAKE ANY ERRORS HERE, okay? This will speed up menu response time dramatically, on XP.
1) Open Registry Editor
2) Expand the branches to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop
3) double-click the MenuShowDelay value
4) the neumeric value you enter heree is the milliseconds widnows will wait before opening a menu. Default is 400 (about half a second). Enter 0 (zero) here to eliminate delay COMPLETELY (this feels odd, I would see how you like it,) or a very large value (65534 is the largest value it will accept) to disable the automatic opening of menus.
5) Click OK and close the regedit - log out and log back in.

SPEED UP SYSTEM STARTUP:
thin out all those fonts you never use
clean out temp folder - you will be amazed.
eliminate uneeded network components - like drive letter mapping - that you do not need.
Reduce autostart progs - already mentioned above.

SPEED UP SYSTEM SHUTDOWN:
1: reducing hung application timeout

1) open regedit
2) expand branches to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop
3)double click WaitToKillAppTimeout value - default is 20000 miliseconds (20 seconds) change to 2000
4) also in this key is HungAppTimeout value enter the same value 2000
5) Expand the branches to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM|CURRENTCONTROLSET\CONTROL
6) double click WaitToKillServiceTimeout value change as above for appkills. value to 2000

close up regedit, reboot.
OPTIMIZE VIRTUAL MEMORY:
Optimize virtual memory and cache settings:
1) doubleclick system icon in control panel choose advanced tab, click settings in performance section. chooise advanced tab. click change.
2) choose Custom Size and type the SAME value for Initial and Maximum size. Three times the ammount of RAM you have should be the value you use.
3) click SETZ amd OK.
close and reboot.

DEFRAGGING PAGE FILE:
this is not for the faint of heart, but works so well I have to share it.
IF you have no partitions (most of you) then first shut off virtual memory. This is done by going back to the prior area "optimize virtual memory" and pick the "no paging file" button, hit SET.
REboot. Run disk defrag (dfrg.msc or use the icon driven method - system, something,something, its where all that crap is in the pull-up menu, if you dont know where it is, you are in way over your head. Stop while your PC is still working).
After Defragging, go back to virtual memory area and reset paging file andmade sure your virtual memory is set to 3x the RAM and is constant (the same value in both boxes).

I have a few more REGISTRY swaps which will
1) keep the OS system in physical memory, resulting in faster OS speed
2)change I/O value altering values of data transfer most useful for servers
3) alter systemcachefile size.

I wont share these here, as you can totally hose your PC if you dont know what you are doing. If you want to know aobut them ask me.

I want to thank Dr. Karp for these alterations to XP which I have found valuable. I hope you do as well.

If you decide to follow any of these suggestions, you do so at your own risk - I have used them sucessfully. I wont hold your hand if you dont know what they are, and you mess up and need help. You should never mess with your PC's OS, esp REGEDIT, unless you know what you are doing and how to undo it.
