Effects on Lung Capacity (athletes?)

Post by SirKevin »

How does marijuana affect your lung capacity, long & short term? Any athletes/runners have experiences to share?

I smoke bud, almost daily and I also am in training for boxing. I run anywhere from 3-8 miles every other day or do sprints.

I guess I should also mention that I only smoke once a day to. Used to smoke all the time and then I could notice it a little. It's funny though when I smoke pot It seems that I can run for greater distances without stopping. Best part about smoking and running though is smoking as soon as you are done running then going and taking a nice shower and putting on some tunes in the bathroom!

Anyways I think as long as you have your priorities in the order you want to have them Ex: Running, sports, pot then you will be ok, but if you let pot get ahead of the other two then guess you are shit out of luck!

I am a pretty serious amateur bodybuilder and I am also a professional household furniture mover.

Right now due to my living conditions I would classify myself as a moderate pot user. Before always a heavy user. And I also smoke almost a pack of cigs a day.

I have had no problems with lung capacity when it comes to weight training, it doesn't make me breath heavy enough to be affected.

I do sometimes see problems on my job..especially when we are doing moves on third and fourth floors. It doesn't affect the way I do my job (strength like wise) but I do sometimes find myself rather short of breath. I tend to pant alot more than I used too.

Running is pretty much out of the question for me. I have knee problems for starters and so they hurt like a bitch . I haven't really done any competitive running in years. But from quick jogs over to the corner store and stuff I go once again find myself panting.

I guess my conclusion would be that yes,it most certainly does affect lung capacity though it doesn't necesarily harm your overall phsical performance.

I have been a smoker for well over 10 years..cigs even 15 years.

I think that as long as you exercise regularly, you can reduce the effects on your lungs. I've been smoking weed and cigarettes for about 10 years, I used to to boxing, taekwondo and karate, some football, and I go to the gym every now and then.

But some of my friends who don't do sports say that they are out of breath faster than they used to, and they can't run long distances anymore.

Cutthecashflow, I completely agree with your proiritisation of exercise. I'd use weed as incentive for a good run/workout session. I'd finish up, go inside for a nice drink, grab my pipe, head back outside, light a few cones, and you feel like they're well deserved.

like anything that goes in your lungs, smoke affects you...

whether it be running, swimming, jogging, etc.

though I am not really sure what the difference would be between marijuana smoke and tobacco smoke on the lung?

maybe I should start a new post?

please dont.
tobacco effects your lung capacity twice as much as weed smoke. i base this on absolutely no scientific evidence but on personal experience...i have been seriously effected by tobacco smoke along with many other people that i know....my friend is an all-state cross country runner and he smokes weed everyday and he says it has zero effect on his breath capacity.
when i lay off the cigarettes but stay with the MJ my lungs are fine but when i pick up a grit my shortness of breath doesnt even let me work out.

Like other people have already said smoking weed didnt effect me when i was playing football. I never smoked cigs, but am willing to bet that will fuck you moreso than weed.

Well, I'm a college athlete, and I smoke, not avidly becuase of random drug tests, so, not during the school year basically, but during the off season, or the first week of break, I smoke many times a day. I haven't noticed any longterm effects...immediatly I do, like the same day, or the day after, but if i don't do it for a week, the effects slowly go away.
