I've always had this foolish dream of being a syndicated cartoonist that's in the funnies all over North America. Kinda like Schultz, Keane, Johnston, Davis...all the greats. I've got a little bit of talent, but never went to university or art college.
I lost my urge to strive for an 'arts' related job when my Uncle Gary slapped reality in my face when I was 13.
Uncle- "What do you want to be when you grow up?"
Me- "A cartoonist!! Like the guy that draws Charlie Brown!"
Uncle- "An artist, eh? You'll NEVER make any money that way!! Get a trade...become a plumber!"
Me- ***Runs crying to my room to hug my Snoopy doll, and make Snoopy Sno-cones***
"Th-th-that buh-buh-buh-bastard!!"
I remember saying I wanted to grow up to be a "garbage man, or a mass murderer" in my Grade 9 yearbook...they didn't print the 'mass murderer' part. And I spent some time in the guidance counsellors office for that one.
If I had a scanner, or a better web cam that could capture better details, i'd show you some of my sketches and paintings over the years. I've saved shit that I did when I was like 10. I was almost a better artist back then than I am today. Of course, I drew a hell of a lot back then. My drawings looked a lot like Napoleon Dynamites....lol....Man I lost it during those scenes when he was drawing 'sweet' things.
