Need help with a new bong [WARNING: TWO ~130k 800x600 pics]

Post by aktri »

Hello everyone! I've been lurking here on the forums for a while now and figured this would be as good a post as any to start =D This first post is just background information, so if you just want to see the design you can skip it.

I'm nineteen and I've been smoking for about five months or so now. I've always liked really diving in to whatever peaks my interest, and I hate to do anything half-assed. I'm getting to the point where I want to dive deeper, so the ideas of build my own smoking devices and growing have started to pop into my head more and more often.

My first foray into actually building somthing I could smoke out of happened a few days ago. My friend had made a steam-roller out of a cardboard inner tube he took from the middle of a roll of paper towels. It was a five minute job, and that's only because he quickly wrapped the outside with black electrical tape. It worked well, and he lent it to me a few days later so I could have some fun. Needless to say I got high and lost it =( A couple days go by and, after already telling him about the loss and promising to buy him a new bowl, I find it! So I decide instead of giving him back his overused, crumpled up steam-roller I would make him a new one.

My mother, as luck would have it, has a few leftover Pringles can she's been saving for some unkown reason. I swiped one and turned it it to the sweetest steam-roller I've seen yet. I wrapped the entire outside in black electrical tape, which has made it waterproof (as the inside is covered in something that makes the cardboard not get wet already), used a washer and some velcro stickers to secure the bowl when in use and allow for easy removal and cleaning, taped up the cap and also made a hole in the cap with a ridge of tape around it for people to use who have smaller hands. The cap can be removed for people with larger hands, and it does clear better with the back completely open. When the cap is put back on it completely reseals from the electrical tape I used. To top it off, my mother is a Pharmacist and smuggled me out some cool stickers, so it says stuff like "Caution: Cancer Causing Toxin", "Not For The Eye", "Keep Sealed From Life", etc. all over it. To hit it you have to put the thing over your mouth, which covers your entire jaw and feels like wearing a mask. Needless to say, my friends absolutely love it and we've gotten extremely messsed up a few times already. It seems to be holding up really well, and the best part is I had access to all the materials so it was free for me to build and an excellent learning experience.

This success inspired me to build another smoking device, and after doing a bunch of reading I've decided to make a water bong. I know it would be easier (and maybe even cheaper) to just buy a pre-made bong, but I have a killer design worked out and I'd love to try building it myself. I really don't mind paying for materials if it works out well, and so I'm posting here to get some advice.

schematics...

As you can see from the schematics this is no ordinary water bong. It is actually a bong/lung hybrid that I have named the "Chinchilla Pump-Action" design. I will be using three of those very large square-like Gatorade jugs, but I don't have them yet so I don't know the dimensions. I’m sealing everything inside, including all the parts for the pump, with a silicone gun. The pump I am making myself, using a Pringles can and some hollow pipe. When pulling the smoke through you just cover the hole. It should take more than one pump to fill the two chambers, so you can just take your thumb off the hold and push it back down, then you're ready to pump again. When both smoke chambers are filled you simply remove the inner pump and that Pringles can becomes your (now completely open) carb. At this point you just pop the top (DISCLAIMER: ONCE YOU POP, YOU JUST CAN"T STOP) of the center Pringles can and suck to your hearts content. The wide holes throughout should cause little resistance, so you'll get it all in pretty fast, and the water will (of course) be iced, which will help the smoke feel considerably smoother. If you read my first post you’ll know that I made a steamroller recently. It was also a Pringles can and I learned a lot from the design. One important thing I learned was that a normal Pringles doesn’t seal to your face well, because you have to stick your entire chin in with your mouth just to take a hit. The hits still blow you back, but you lose a little pressure between the cheeks and the Pringles can, which can cause you to miss some smoke in the chamber. In this design I’m forming face-fitting wings to stick on both sides of the Pringles can and promote suction. From what I’ve read, I’ve learned that volume = filtration, so I hope that by using the entire first Gatorade jug full of water the hits might be ultra clean. I had just a few questions about the design that I wasn’t sure about, so I’ve come here for input =D

1) I’m not sure what kind of hose to use between the water chamber and the first smoke chamber. I’d like to be able to disconnect the two for easy filling/icing/ cleaning, but I’m afraid that I would be wasting pressure if I use a garden hose. Would having a smaller opening at [7] and/or [8] than at [9] cause the smoke to be drawn inefficiently?
2) I haven’t decided what to make my bowl out of yet, but I’ll most likely be using the end of a garden hose. Would putting a screen at the end of the hose cause it to bubble more and help the filtration?
3) When making the inside of the pump, which I’ve labeled the “cork”, what materials would you recommend? I figured I would be using cork but thought it over and was concerned it may not seal well. Is there a good low cost material that I might be able to make it out of? As I said before, I don’t mind spending money of this stuff, but why spend more than I have to?

I’m sure I had another question, but I smoked some Kind Bud and forgot. I know there are a lot of you that won’t understand at all why I’m doing this, but for those of you who do I’d love any advice you might have to offer. Thanks in advance!

Keep it simple

Post by carl24bpool »

Don't spend too long making bongs, just smoke the pot.

Keep the design simple so it's easy to maintain and avoid using anything cardboard. stick to bottles, drain pipe etc.

A great bong design is to get about 18" of 2" PVC waste pipe and tape this over the water container off one of those hand pump water spray things for plants you can buy at the garden centre. buy a 10mm grommet, which in the UK are used on back-boxes for electrical plug sockets to protest the wires as they enter the box. Get about 6" of garden hose (which fits snugly into the grommet) and fit this to the water container at the bottom of the bong.
voila. Toke away.
Tokes like a bitch!!!!

PVC stands for "Polyvynyl Chloride" or something close to that. What is important about this is that PVC is made using Chlorine gas. PVC pipe is used to carry waste that doesn't get very hot; sewage, water, etc. When PVC becomes warm, say around 100º, it releases a little chlorine gas. When you hold a flame to a bowl, there's a pretty good chance the PVC will be heated up too. It is my recommendation that you don't use PVC. Most plastics release fumes when heated, but chlorine is espicially bad for you.
