For the beginner who wants to make a cheap, decent pipe, i would suggest going to a hardware store (home depot, sutherlands, etc), if you can get a ride there with someone who doesnt mind you making drug appliances. Go to the valve section, and look for a 90 degree valve, (has a hole going down and directly intersects another hole, for lack of better terms). If youre looking to put a screen in it, you can buy a faucet screen, and trim it to size. Then, go home, load the herb in the top, and light up
this is what i do, and i like my pipe ^.^
however, theres one bad thing that i have noticed (and its common sense as well): the metal gets hot as shit, so dont keep the flame there for more than 10 or 15 seconds. I burnt myself doing that :/
