I see the logic in the argument that bongs could be counterproductive, but that isn't my experience at all. I get higher for longer off bong rips than I do off anything else. I figure it's because you can take bigger hits from a bong because the smoke is cooled, and I take monster hits anyway, so you take in more smoke per hit.
