Um....good question.

I believe it is a process that is done scientifically. They transfer the good genes from several plants into a plant cell and then that makes a new breed. Not something a lay man would be doing. But , I'm not sure so don't quote me on that.

could this happen at all if you just mix up differant seeds and plant them?

No, each plant would just grow individually. You can grow several different strains in the same field or room.
