On the minimap on that picture, all the X's are either people or player-owned private shops. It's also only showing people in my vicinity.
For some reason though I just love this style of animation. Don't get me wrong I'm not some fuckin anime nerd - I fuckin hate Japanese animation. This game just reminds me so much of the coolest game I ever played - Legend of Mana.
