ok lets begin the theology class..
first of all, the bible was written somewhere in the 9th-10th century and was subsequently revised a milion times over by a million different people.
The largely accepted verasion is that Charlemagne wanted to consolidate his empire and found the growing sect of Christianity very useful. His people used to worship the sun and he mingled both his "pagan" religion and Christianity to lay the foundations to what is seen today.
The DaVinci Code quotes much of this (but has a lot of fiction as well)..
Second of all..the bible is all about ALLEGORY and METAPHOR..you're studying philosophy right? you have to read between the lines...(i think iv said this before)
Did the earth really get flooded and did Noah really make an ark and colect all the species of the world? i dont know for sure. What i do know is that the ancient man would always use the easiest way to communicate and describe stuff when things were beyond his comprehension...just as we do now...
Another thing:
if you think Roswell is wierd..you should see the number of references to flying craft and beings emerging from them in the Bible....
makes you think about how the Pyramids were built doesnt it?
i mean its near impossible to imagine those things being built without the aid of modern machinery isnt it?
Bahhhhh

well according to the bible..there was that tower of babel incident and everyone was sent to diferent parts of the world...
my reasoning is..humans had to separate ..they couldnt stay in one area for too long..being as they were basically hunters and gatherers..so this constant migration through the stone age, the subsequent breaking of continents with the ice age, et etc...
climatic changes, different weather...diverging gene pools...etc etc is how you got different races...

The bible is a lot older than that.
Man I am way too stoned to intelligently debate you right now so I'm not even going to try, but I wonder where you got your information from.
Oh but the reason I replied in the first place is because last summer at my property, in Montana, I found something very interesting, bearing in mind that I found it at an elevation of 12,000 feet above sea level, pretty much on top of a mountain. The fossil of a seashell. How the fuck did that get there?????????????????????????????????????????????????????

the bible is older than that if you're taking into account the version that was handed down from father to son, priest to priest..all by word of mouth..have you heard of the Illiad and The Odyssey..Homer's epics..they were handed down by word of mouth long before they were actually written down...
how did that sea shell get up there?
easy..during the ice age when there was a continental shift..several areas collided...i dont know about your area, but the Himalays here were created when the landmass known as the Indian sub-continent broke off from Antartica and moved north, colliding with Asia, creating the Himalayas..
where do i get my infomation from?
well various sources...
studied sociology and theology in college along with my English major..and did a double masters in sociology and english...so
most of this is my own views..but the rest is wel-researched facts done by several eminent theological historians...

Plate tectonics. Mountains are the result of two plates crashing into eachother, one pushes the other upwards, and since Montana used to be sea back in the old days, the top of that mountain is really just the bottom of an ancient sea.Weedguru Caro wrote:

to go back to Sammy's original issue..
the only way to rule in ancient times was by fear..and nothing scared the fuck out of peole than when shit happened that they could not explain..also you have to keep in mind that languages were not as developed as they are now...(they didnt know what fuck meant..
)
anyway..they didnt have the words to describe natural phenomena which you and me could have no problem identifying with. Hence they worshipped volcanoes, storms, the rain..etc (before on.his.right jumps down my throat, im talking religion as a whole and not just christianity.
what HASNT changed much since the Stone Age has been man's desire for power and control..some stone age mofo who obviously didnt get freaked by lightening flashes must have decided to make a killing in the witch doctor trade...who could have been more powerful than someone who acts as a conduit between "normal people" and the Gods...
which is why..in every single fairy tale..all the way from Aladdin's Magic Lamp, the high priest/ shaman/ etc always has a very important role to play.
Religion changed over the years as people found newer and diferent ways to deal with fear...
whats different between people then and people now?.....
Today, that fear has been replaced with love...
To understand the old texts, you have to first understand that they were not written in English..they were written in Aramaic, Hebrew, Latin and probably Arabic..these are merely translations..and as everyone knows..you always lose something in the translation...
There are a lot of folk out there who go by every single word..they believe the written word to be the truth...
read this book: Conversations with God by Neale Donald Walsh for a new perspective on religion...it doesnt matter what religion you belong to...
On another note, how can you explain that three biggest religions in the world...all have their roots in Israel: Islam, Christianity and Judaism...the Old Testament is virtualy unchanged in each of holy texts...
Yet, each religion has a completely different belief structure, ways of worship and ideals....
edit: sorry i digressed quite a bit..but wanted to get this out
