L337 as in "Elite".
It evolved by hackers as a way to get around word recognition in e-mail services (the US Gov't has the ability to screen every e-mail for certain words like (Bomb and destroy and things like that). "L337-speak" evolved, like I said before, to get around this.
Now CS script kiddies have adopted it into regular use as a means of trying to look cool (which actually only serves to make them look even more retarded).
