Religion: a comfort blanket for the weak?

do you feel religion simply a way for man to escape the fear of not knowing if there is an afterlife?
- a way for someone to be arrogant and cast doubt upon all those who dissagree?
- a way to passify the population in thier ethic to reduce civil disorder?
Or would you rather think of it as a source of inner strength and clarity?
- a way which will enlighten and aid the world?
- something which could save mankind through peace and love?
maybe the question isnt that clear as im stoned while writing it, but i would like your thoughts on the matter...

Some people use it as a comfort blanket.
But then again, some people use smoking as a comfort blanket.
You can meditate, you can pray, you can cut yourself... these are just escape methods people use to relieve themselves of stress. There are negative ways and there are positive ways. It's just a different case for everyone. But whatever people choose, I just hope they don't go too far with it and do something extreme.

one of the main reason's i posted this topic, was because of a christian friend of mine (or should i say ex friend as he wont talk to me anymore) i asked him, "if god created light, then bla bla bla then humans, where does your religion account for the dinosaurs?"
to which he replied "they were put thier to test our faith" and quickly changed the subject...
this is just one example where i have shown him flaws in his religion, which is probably why he dont talk to me anymore lol

I think the dinosures were here, then they died lol obviusly.
Then i think the first human came from the bacteria in the sea,as the little fishies did, then the rest of the animals came along, so the human shagged a monkey lol thats were the ppl say we developed from monkeys came from (omfg what am i saying )lmao
And my thought on god is, everybody has a chance to play god for the day when u die lol thats why their is good and bad things that happen in our lives because sum ppl are evil sum ppl r nice

A collection of debates that is all you'll ever need to read about religion, and I'm dead serious:
Do you believe in God?
Evolution vs Religion
Atheist vs Ex-Atheist

save mankind thru peace and love?!?!?!?!?
the biggest load of bollox ive ever heard...that would never ever happen
nearly all wars are based on one thing.......
peoples beleifs are destroying us all
id like to think that there is something after life...i mean...who wants to just live for 80 years and...well....thats it, you just drop dead and you are no more.(im a see it to beleve it kinda person)........ (and i havent seen it... so therefore i dont believe it)
i rekon religions were just dremt up to give the uneducated mind (which is wat people were thousands of years ago) a way of explaining why things were....or how they got there...so yeah...its more like a blanket . a blanket of storys because we need explanations for every thing
am i making sense??

Not particularly, but many relevent facts can be picked out of your post. Something you may have been getting at, but I'll state it more clearly here, is this:
War, murder, and terrorism on the basis of religion are responsible for more deaths than any other non-natural source (comparative population counts, too - obviously the religious wars killed less people when the world population was less, so that is taken into account).
