Why do we call them pants when referring to a singular article of clothing?
And why is it called a pair of pants or a pair of underwear? Pair of socks makes grammatical sense. Pair of pants does not.

good question about underwear but pants i believe refers to the "pant" as one leg and the two are bound together to make a pair of pants
