Hip-Hop enthusiasts: Scholarly work inside! Please look.

I need your help. I need to interview a few people who are involved in freestyle rap culture. I'm doing scholarly work on how writing effects lyric composition. Do any of you know where I can get recordings or transcripts of freestyle battles? I've got a couple recordings off kazaa. Any and all help or thoughts from those of you knowledgable about freestyle performance would be greatly appreciated.
Here's my research proposal.
Orality theory may be described as the study of methodologies used to present information in a non-literate way. The focus of orality theory is on pre-literate cultures, that is, those people who have no suspicion of writing. But as Walter Ong points out early in his book Orality and Literacy, we are in the age of secondary orality. This is a new era – one shaped by and dependant on new technologies that are themselves dependant on literacy. Our understanding of contemporary forms of non-literary expressions can be furthered by studying them with the history of orality and literacy in mind.
The bards of ancient Greece and first millennia Europe served their culture in multidimensional ways. Not only were they poets, capable of spontaneously creating spoken works of art (more will be discussed about this later), they were living historians who conveyed a sense of cultural identity to their audiences. How might these figures be represented in modern day society, a society where our histories are kept on paper?
The bard is alive, and he is in the hip-hop clubs downtown.
Hip-hop as a contemporary art form has its roots both in literacy and orality. There is a suspected profound difference in pre-composed rap lyrics and what is known as freestyle. This paper attempts to define those differences that occur between lyrics composed within the realm of literacy and the lyrics which are delivered spontaneously, often in the form of a “battle”.
Much scholarly work has been done on the dynamics of hip-hop. Most of the available resources make no distinction between pre-composed and spontaneous deliverances of rap poetry. Yet this is the arena most of interest to the student of orality theory. Are freestylers working with a litany of pre-fabricated phrases? What role does repetition play in spontaneous oral delivery? How does the agonistic tone transfer to freestyle battling? What are the limitations of freestyle? How does the aid of writing change the structure of lyrics?
The answers to these questions and others will be evasive, as this focus has not been exclusively attended to in the current studies on hip-hop. One can infer certain conclusions from them, but ultimately a new path of research must be blazed. Studies on orality theory will be applied to all available information concerning the nature of rap composition. Expect the personal interview, both those conducted by the author and those conducted by the media to be a primary source of information in answering the question: how does orality theory apply to freestyle hip-hop?

I'll battle you gurl!

This is an effort I've just written:

I've got a record for mammoth battles on file, I can make anyone smile
Screeching round the town on 17 inch pirelli's made in carlisle, coz I go that extra mile,
I'll make the whole room shudder, when I freestyle I make 6ft, 18 stone bouncers stutter.
Born and raised in a northern place, unphased by anyone who gets in my way, black, white, gay or straight, I'll show you your fate
Your destined to lose coz I've got a short fuse, I don't need a Muse, just my own brain creating metaphors that'll run you down like a runaway express train
Refrain from making any drastic moves coz you'll lose, you fool, you'll never be cool
You may as well sit on the floor and frown coz I'll be wreckin this **** until the Sun goes down, you clown, listen to my sound i'm spittin in your ear, faster than a ferrari F40 in 6th gear, I'll make a tear run down your face with my lyrical excellence flying at full pace, my freestyle will be a world craze
Indians will be wreckin this poem on the banks of the Ganges, to African Nomad tribes spittin in click languages, dancin around 60ft bonfires, under the stars, they'll even be extraterrestrials who wanna battle me on Mars
They'll fly down in their saucer and beam me up in my Porche, take me to another dimension but I've got different intentions and cause tension when I battle their leader and beat him hands down only to be given a crown for the Universal freestyle sound.
My sting is like a bee just like Muhammed Ali and I'll eat up any challenge for tea, you wanna battle me?, ha! don't be silly, my rhymes are faster than a pedigree Philly, bitch!

That's what I've done so far. It's a bit short but I'll extend it. If you can see a bit of a resembelance to Canibus, dont be suprised, I totally love his stuff.
I think it's pretty good bearing in mind I'm a middle-class white boy from England ;)

Tweek - wow dude, that was really good! Monumental style. My question would be, did you compose the bulk of it orally, or on paper? Please answer truthfully. The numerous references to freestyle make me think that this type of language is something you could produce spontaneously? Thank you so much for replying. I hope to talk to you more in depth about this.

Oh, and before this thread gets replied to I'd like to request that we stay on topic here as I am serious about lyric composition analysis ~ thanks! If you would like to learn more about orality theory (ha ha) visit this link to view my papers on it.

Well, to be perfectly honest, I usually try and freestyle at the top of my voice in my car on the way to work. I just mumble rubbish until I get one sentence that rhymes. Once I have that one sentence, I make another which relating to the first sentence. After that, I sort of have the foundations for the rest of the freestyle and it becomes alot easier after the first few lines. Then, if I really suprise myself by what I've made up, I might get home and write it down, then post it on a freestyle battling forum.

I think you get a rhyming mind when you listen to alot of freestyles. As I say, i like Canibus, he raps about how good he is and thats rubbed off on me.

Excellent! Can you post the link to that forum?
Seriously, that really helps me. :D

But in response to what you said, when you're listening to freestyles, are they really spontaneous recordings? That is what I'm trying to get at here - I know that there are guys who battle face to face, without a chance to write the shit down first. That's the distinction I'm trying to make. So what you said, about how you compose, is good (for me)- you're working it out orally first. I'm really interested in the ability to spontaneously compose lyrics (I can't do it! ).

A couple years ago I used to go to a Hip Hop Club, because I was interested in writing rap lyrics. I was able to witness many entertaining freestyle battles and activities between rappers. My instructor tried to teach me how to freestyle, and I could only come up with kiddish rhymes as in "cat in the hat with the bat"(<--ok,not really)..I think its very difficult to come up with catchy phrases from the top of your head(Sparky worked it good though) but what I was really good at was taking out some time to think and write creative lyrics designed to blow people off! And believe me some actually did.I also used to go to an online forum for freestyling, unfortunatley I don;t remember the name of the site, and I wish I could because it was a great site and I think It would've helped you out.
But as the time went by I was introduced into Rock(by Sparky),and began to listen to it more than I did with Hip Hop. Although there are many "real" rappers and hip hop groups out there, most of the mainstream ones all care about is their "Ice,Hoes,Money and Cars"

Jesus christ, I am struggling through this ~ it's supposed to be fun for me! :? What you were talking about Skwerl, "kiddish rhymes" or transcending them, is explained here in far more complexity:
If the unfolding of language over time is is thought of as a horizontal strip, at each syntactical moment a vast range of possibilities is vertically "stacked". One can spin the wheel of grammatically and logically possible terms (e.g. "the cat sat on the: mat, car, tree, grass, chair") and/or the wheel of sounds ("the cat sat on the mat, the rat, the hat," etc); the trick of sygnifying is to do both at once, to find homonymic connections that serve either to undermine, parody, or connect in a suprising way the underlying connotations of [vernacular] language.
Only in my world could they call rhymes "homophonic syntax". This sux.

A friend of mine is a freestyle lyricist, I'll see if I can get something out of him. Don't expect much though, if he's not freestyling he's either asleep ot too stoned to function properly.

Just wanted to bring my topic back to the table. I actually got to witness some freestyle by my little brother's friends; it was awesome coz I was able to analyze them for my paper, too bad my little brother got me soooo stoned I wasn't able to record them or write anything down. Anyways I REALLY need good recordings or transcripts of freestyle lyrics; if anyone can help me out I'll donate seeds. Thanks.
