Math Homework

Post by Weedguru Higher »

So my daughter who's in grade 6 has once again with homework that I can't do...

Here's the question that we need an answer for

Christopher and Aaron are playing a guess-my-number game. Christopher is thinking of 2 numbers. Their greatest common factor is 6. Their least common multiple is 36. What are the 2 numbers?

I forget what a common factor is...go ahead, laugh at me hehe

Not the numbers I got but I guess it still works. I guess it all depends how you interpret
...Their least common multiple is 36..

Thanks for the answers guys...

So, Ziggy you think both those answers are correct?

Some one else told me it was 1 and 36....

I don't think it can be 1

Because nothing multiplied by 6 will give you 1

Unless I'm remembering the definition of factor incorrectly

I wouldnt guess it would be 36 n 1, because the definition of a factor is ... "divisor: one of two or more integers that can be exactly divided into another integer; "what are the 4 factors of 6?" And you cant really divide anything into 1 besides 1.

6 n 6 sounds like a plausible answer, it all depends how you interpret "...Their least common multiple is 36...". My answer and the one that Zero gave both work for that, but in different ways.

6 n 6 work because the greatest number you can divide both of them by is 6
And when you multiply them together, it comes to 36...however, upon reading it again, the least common multiple could be 12 for them, just multiply 6 x 2 and the other 6 x 2, and that would be the least common multiple. (I know Im not explaining this well, but its hard without showing you somehow)

For my answer, I used A and B (Answers)---> A = 12 .... B = 18
The highest number you can divide both of them by is 6
However this is where my and zero's answer's differ. My answer consists of two different numbers, thus making it harder to find a common multiple. However if you multiply A x 3 and B x 2, you get 36 for both of them. Im sure if you multiplied those two numbers by higher numbers, they would eventually have a common multiple again, however 36 is the lowest common multiple you can get with these two numbers.

If you want to teach your daughter and give her a better understanding of how the question is worded, maybe present both of them to her, describing how they can both work. Personally I like my answer, but thats because I thought of it lol

Oh man, all that math made my head spin!

I truly suck at math:p

Me too....I feel so inferior not being able to do elementary school homework....

But it's not entirely my fault, they've changed the way math is done...they don't even do long division the same way anymore god damnit.
