yeah definatly, i would start out with the classics:
Miles Davis: Most influental trumpet player, maybe the single most inventive and diverse musician in the 1900's. Good albums are: The Birth of the Cool and 'Round About Midnight, later on, Bitches Brew. My favorite songs by Miles are "So What", "Round About Midnight", "Judo" and "Boplicity"
Charlie Parker: Alto Sax, created "be-bop" and influenced and got people like Miles Davis and Clifford Brown started. Any kind of "Greatest hits" are pretty good because his best tracks are really spread out. My favorites are "Kim", "The Time is Now", "Orithology", "Leap Frog", "Scrapple From the Apple"
Clifford Brown: An other good trumpet player. Played with drummer Max Roach a lot. Any of their joint albums are great. "Take the A Train" is by far their most well known track.
Charles Mingus: My favorite (guess why?) Godfather of the bass, extremely virtueostic (sp). Created the first idea of "Free/Avant Garde Jazz". My favorite album is a little hard to find but its called "Charles Mingus with Orchestra". Other good ones are "Mingus, Mingus, Mingus, Mingus, Mingus", "Mingus Ah Um" and "The Clown". Everything on these albums will blow your mind, they are all amazing what he does with "colours".
John Coltrane: Most creative Tenor/Soprano sax, used music as most of a spiritual meditation and to reach god. Could solo for 20+ Minute on the same song s and not get boring. First started with Miles Davis but created his own quartet later on. Good albums are "Blue Trane" and "giant Steps". As you get more into this cat, find some of his other "out" albums, they will truly define what it means to lose your self in music. Absolutely amazing.
Well there you go. Sorry for the rather long post but this is the essential artists of jazz (in my opinion) i still left out many great people, but this is a good place to start. Happy Listening

Oh yeah definatly, Norah Jones has a great voice and shes done a lot for the jazz world to bring it to the masses. If you like her listen to Sarah Vaughn and Cassandra Wilson, also great female voices.[/b]
