well i havent been here long, but i need some advice.

im 15 years old. ive been playing basketball since i was 6. at a high level from the age of 9. so ive been playing pretty competitivly from 6 years. i dont know what to do with basketball anymore, im just not enjoying it as much as i used to. its just like a chore, something i have to do.

my coach told me maybe 2 weeks ago that if i want to, i could play at the aba level within the next 2 years. which is pretty good. id be getting paid 30k a year to play basketball, stay fit, and have social life relating to basketball. as well as having a day job. so id be sitting on 50-60k a year by the time i was 18. which is more than my dad makes after he has got 3 diplomas, and 25-30 years experience in his field.

so its quite tempting to go for it, and try to get to the aba level. but the problem again is, i just dont enjoy it.

im not sure on what to do, should i go for something i dont enjoy and make alot of money? or should i quit basketball like ive been planning to do all year and have more time for school, studing and social life.

by the way, i play basketball on friday nights. so i miss out on one of the biggest nights of the week. every week. which is really starting to shit me.

i think if i quit id probably be happier, id have more time to party and chill with friends. more time for study, and get proper sleep. and maybe even start going to the gym twice a week which would replace my training in basketball.

im totally confused on what to do, i just wrote this quickly. so ive kinda just thrown it in your face. but any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

laterzz :)

Do whatever makes you happy man. Don't let money get in your way of having fun. Money isn't the most important thing in life.

i used to play basketball but never had the opportunity to continue it but I took a year off when i got tired of it and when the next year came around i was in love with the sport again, so...... if you truly love the sport keep playing but if it is not making you happy and you feel you can live without it, give it up

playing at the ABA level is a very very difficult thing too not only do, but to also maintain playing...
With the introduction of import players aswell many of the best from around the country, i'd say you really have to be dominating the VC, not just your team to be a definate on the ABA (unless your 7'6 or something ;) )
however saying all of this i dont think you should give up basketball. rep ball on friday nights is a very very positive thing... in all aspects of life. And your social life really wont be affected that much... yeah you miss out on some parties during 10,11, but by the time you get to 12 and 1st year uni, you really dont miss out on much cause you go out later anyway. so yeah it initially sucks... but it really doesnt it affect it hugely ( the training on sundays can suck some days after a big sat night)

in the end mate its all about enjoying your basketball. i took half a year off at bottom age 18's, but went back and played cause i missed it and i missed the mates that i played with.
so maybe some time off, maybe just keep playing.... in the end no matter what people say its only you that can decide...

good luck mate

It's up to you man. It's a weird situation to have because most people would want to be playing the sport as opposed to not being able/wanting to. With that being said if you don't enjoy it, then stop. But remember you may not enjoy it now, but that doesn't mean you won't be enjoying it when you reap the benefits of playing at a high level. It takes hard work to get there, and that's the stage you're at now. If you stop playing for good, chances are you won't get another chance. It's a decently tough decision, but in the end it comes down to you and where you want to go in life.

I love playing basketball, never played it in teams or anything.

I remember when I was about 9 years old (we used to have an apartment on the Dominican Republic, in some resort) and I met a kid from Manhattan there, he had the same thing so each year for a period of 7 years I saw him there for three weeks, mad fun.

Anyway, one year I was playing basketball with him and he taught me the right throwing technique, now since I was still small and the ball was a bit too heavy for me to actually be able to throw it far using that technique I sucked ass haha.

But I can honestly say I'm a pretty good shot these days, I mean I miss over half the times I throw, but when I score it's always a clean shot, not hitting the hoop.

Plus I'm way too small to play the sport (1.75m)

I knew how tall I was in feet and inches. I converted that into meters and I'm 1.89 meters tall. Seems so short saying it that way.

i was in a similar situation, but a different sport. ski racing. I never went out on weekends from late november to late may (pretty much the whole school year) until i quit this last year. I did have the opportunity to train all winter to try to make it on an elite regional level but I was over it. 12 years of racing had worn me out. I have no regrets because I accomplished a lot, but you have a golden opportunity, why not tala chance and see how the ABA is?
btw i never had the chance to get paid to ski
