thinking about going on anti depressants

so i had a realy long and serious talk with a friend of mine a few days ago, and the conclusion was he suggested that i go to the doctor and try anti depressants. he says he has suffered from depression for years now and it sounds like i should get help. i never seriously thought i had something wrong with me, chemical inbalance, but he told me feeling sad and low eveytime you are alone is not normal. and ive felt that way my whole life. i only feel normal/happy if im surronded by people/friends and as soon as i have time by myself to relax and think my mood turns. and sometimes i only pretend to be happy infront of friends so they dont feel bad or know somethings wrong, and if i let that slip they all notice so i just cover it again. i alos act very weird around my family most of the time, liek i ca be so happy but as soon as im around them i turn into a bitch. i treat them so horrible and act like some one i dont want to be....
ok, so i put this into the mass debate thread for a couple of reasons, first i was trying to put it into what i thought was the right area. second, i wanted to know if anyone had thoughts or similar experinces. like should i go to a doctor and talk to them? does this even sound like depression? one friend of mine i also tried talking to told me this wasnt depression, and she said i had to think about killing myself everyday. i never think about killing myself, but sometimes i do think about what would happen if i died on say, the walk to school, if i got hit by a car. like how would they identify the body and who would inform my parents.
ok, im done now.

You don't want to go on prescribed medication for the rest of your life if you absolutely don't have to. It might not seem like that big of a thing but you'll probably turn into a pill junkie whenever you can't afford your prescribed meds and thats when your life will feel like its all going to shit. If I was depressed I wouldn't go on that shit no matter what. It fucked up my moms life and she didn't have a choice, but I'm definitely not touching the shit and I advise the same to anyone else who doesn't need them. Talk to a doctor, a good, loyal, smart doctor. Try to find a doctor with good recommendations. Others just tell you to take meds cuz it's easier than actually dealing with your problems.

you dont have to think about killing yourself every day... thats just worse depression. ive been depressed most of my life, and i didnt ALWAYS want to kill myself, sometimes i would just feel really lonely, like you said. youve felt that way your whole life, so its most likely depression.

ive been in and out of unit 9 for suicide attempts in the past, or just severe depression and doctors thinking i might do something, even when i said i wouldnt. i was on anti-depressants from 13-17 years old, and it did help after a while. i was just flipping out for the first while i was taking it cause it takes like a month to start workin i guess. but it helped my brain relax, i didnt have all this shit going through my head and it helped me help myself...

only thing, it made me sick at first, and if i forgot to take it for like a day id get sick, but maybe that was just me

but yeah, it is a good thing to think about, just remember youd be on it for a while

Hmmm... Well, I've looked over your records, and double checked with my staff... And... This is really never easy part of my job... You see....

You say you are "unhappy" when you are not out doing things with your friends, within the medical community we like to call this "boredom". You also say you act like a "total bitch" around your family, and even when with your friends you are not 100% full of joy...

I'm very sorry to inform you, but it seems you are suffering from a condition we call "being a teenager". It's hard we know. But I'm gonna to perscribe you some joints, smoke 2 a day and call me next week and I will do a follow up.

But in all seriousness, what the fuck? It just seems to be a simple solution to throw drugs at anything and everything these days.

Mother: "Doctor, my son sometimes doesn't listen to what I tell him, and it seems he'd rather play in the park than sit in one place for hours on end, is this strange for a 5 year old?"
Doc: "Oh yes, very much so, give him these pills 4 times a day"

Man: "Doctor, when I wake up in the morning sometimes I feel just like going back to sleep and not even worrying about going out"
Doc: "Oh, well take this, inject it into your ass twice daily."

Abby, there is nothing wrong with you. It's normal to not be happy all the time, its normal to not get along with your parents, and that doesn't even seem to be the case, you might get along fine with them, you just gotta stop being such a bitch. j/k of course.

As you can tell, I'm not taking this all that seriously, because to be honest its ridiculous.

And there is nothing wrong with thinking about death, people think about things all the time... Thats what we do.

Of course, I'm not a doctor myself, but if you think you have a problem, go seek help. But really, you don't even seem to know what depression means.

My two cents....

I think that anti-depressants cause more harm/problems than they do good. I saw it in my brother when he was on them and i saw it in one of my girlfriends. And a good movie has been made about them too: Prozac Nation

With my girlfriend, she was depressed, so she got a prescription for them. She was supposed to take one like 2 times a day. She moved, but some of my friends still hung out/talked with her. Last i knew she was doing 8 or so a day.........

They get you hooked, and from what ive heard they mask problems instead of helping them. It seems odd to suggest for your situation, but i think that you need to sit down and review with yourself what you want in life. Try to find out what makes you sad when you are alone and how you might (possibly) get rid of/solve that problem/those problems.

Another option is to go to a psychologist. If you get a good one you might identify these things as well.

In any case, i wish you good luck!

I've been severely "depressed" as a young kid, but i really turned around hard, and from my personal experience, anti-depression medicine sucks.

i took it for about a year or 2 and it didn't solve anything

the.truth seems to be telling the truth in this one, suck it up, realize life isn't that bad, work through the hard times in your life, keep your cool, and work on advancing your life (finishing school, working, ect).

you know what got me out of "depression"?

my grandma came up to me and said "cut your fucking bullshit, you aren't depressed - you have no idea what life is like else where in this world, you don't have anything bad and there is no depression. Quit being a baby and suck it up.

that's exactly what she told me and i was so pissed at her that she thought i was a bitch, that i INSTANTLY got my shit together and stopped being a bitch just to prove that i am strong.

i hated her for about a month before i realized i wasn't "depressed" anymore, fuck depression that shit isn't real, fuck searching for attention, get ur life right and quit blaming your problems on depression, there are people out there in other countries who would fucking
LOVE to have your "depression" instead of their life problems.

you might hate me for this, but i'm telling you what you should hear

Sorry Matten, gotta call you on this one. Depression is a very real issue and multiple people who are very close to me have been hurt by depression. My girlfriend tried to kill herself and was hospitalized for it. My aunt was depressed and she jumped off a bridge. It's chemical. It's genetic and it's a real disease, not just attention seeking. Gone untreated, it can prove to be fatal.

If you think you're clinically depressed get medication now.

If someone's depressed, that person IS depressed. The rest of the world does not even matter if you are really depressed.

i mean by this, other people's sadness should not help you to feel better, thinking like this is just stupid.

you feel like the world is crumbling on you, i know, i've just went trought some hard times.

Chocolate's a nice anti-depressent that have helped me sometimes. Eh

If you feel you can't handle the current situation by yourself, take em, and if it works, great. if it does not, at least, you've tried.

it is not like it will kill you, it is designed to help you.
and if in, any way, you feel it will, it will certainly.

Anyway, it is your choice,
i would personnaly take em if you have dificulty to feel good like.. almost everytime, but if you can handle yourself, do not take em, and fight the depression alone and be proud of yourself.

Lotta people telling Abby she doesn't know what depression is, when they're making themselves look foolish by their own definitions of depression.

Abby, you should just go see a professional, and get his/her opinion. Shrinks are annoying IMO, but sometimes they know what they're talking about.

People are looking at the drugs the wrong way too...when you're depressed, your neurotransmitters have a hard time delivering chemicals between brain cells, and anti-depressants raise the levels of the neurotransmitters, and fix weak signals.

People saying that they know somebody that got fucked up after taking them....well they probably weren't really depressed. Some people just have a miserable shitty life.

So that's why you should go see a professional. To me it does seem like depression, it's actually NOT normal to feel unhappy every time you're alone.

shrinks are full of shit. i find it easier to talk to friends about whats wrong, and take their advice, rather than being pressured into talk to somebody who i dont even know, and have them give me textbook answers.

textbook answers are proven, tried and tested effective methods of treating mental illness. I have a great theraputic relationship with my psychotherapist and he's put me on Atarax. It's changed my life in more positive ways than I care to count. It's not an antidepressant its an anti-anxiety med but thats beisdes the point. Go to a doctor and he'll assess you. If you really are suffering from clinical depression he'll prescribe you something and you'll feel all the world better.

Posted: Wed Feb 28, 2007 4:24 am
by Weedguru_Falkon
But why should you be prescribed something? It makes shit worse, it really does.

Because:
It makes you realise that you HAVE to be taking them to be happy and that theres no other way. Even for temporary periods of prescription.

Something that wasn't a pill got you depressed, so something that isn't a pill should make you happy.

Prescriptions are fake. The government tells us that speed is bad, yeah? Well, they prescribe speed to kids with ADD or ADHD. Some of these kids get hooked from it. Its the truth, because i did. i was in 8th fucking grade when i was on that shit and got addicted to it.

My point is, it doesnt matter if a doctor prescribes you something. That doesn't mean the medicine will make your "faults" go away. There is no miracle pill that will cure depression. Its an emotion, just like love, just like hatred, just like joy.

There are things in life that can sway those emotions that arent chemicals that are fed to you by some professional drug dealer.

Not all councelors or shrinks or w/e u want to call them are right....my dumbass person i had for my first day said that a girl a few months ago from an OD from weed. I just laughed out loud a little bit when he said that.
