In terms of outright consistently delivered quality acting I am hard pressed to find anyone more talented than Jonny Depp. There are many other actors who I admire, but none who have never, in my judgement, acted in any poor films. Pacino as Montana was an outstanding performance as was De Niro as Bickle, but both those actors have gone onto 'star' in several pathetic outings. Daniel Day-Lewis is in the same exalted company as Depp and I would also love to stick Del Toro or Cusak in there but alas they have both fucked up at various points of their careers.
But wait a second, I have neglected forest whittaker whose acting prowess is mighty but ultimately a little off Depp's abilities in terms of versatility.

Part of my adoration for Depp is based on his impersonation of Thompson who was a man I respect and learn from even to this very day, but I cannot suggest a film in which Depp has been unsatisfying...so he would get my number one vote if we were actually voting.

As to non english speaking actors: I am a growing fan of Vincent Cassell who has undeniable presence on screen and one of the world's finest women by his side.
