for the screen/mesh, could i just simply use a strainer, an ordinary kitchen one?... like, if i cut it down to size and all, or would that burn ...?

that would work fine, that is basicaly what a normal pipe mesh/guaze is (at least around here) just on a smaller level, it does depend how big the gaps are, but should be good yes

man u better post a a piccie of the pipe you make (when you make it)

that should work fine. ive used the little mesh from the end of a faucet, that never burned, just blackened and got hard. ive also used the screen from an old window (back then they used metal now, vinyl) anyways, ive noticed that the metal screen from the window kinda melts apart and gets brittle and disintigrates(sp?) when im using my butane lighter, or excessive smoking with a regular lighter. but i think you should be fine with a strainer.
