Hello all,
i need help from someone who lives in Amsterdam, or near amsterdam and knows lots about it. i'm wondering what the market for fine wooden furniture and cabinetry is like in amsterdam? does it even exsist?

i'm wondering because i NEED to move to amsterdam, i really feel like it is calling me.

also, what is the cost of living in amsterdam? is it pricey? is it crowded? is it near impossible to find?

any help you guys could provide would be really awsome!!

[EDIT!] also, what is the primary language you guys speak there? would i need to learn dutch, or would i be ok with english?

Haha cool, I live near amsterdam.. but actually feel like I have a same kind of "calling" to live somewhere overseas (Australia, California, Hawai etc) just a place where the sun shines 365days a year.

Any way you're definately ok with english in amsterdam, although most dutch ppl really appreciate it when you'd try to speak dutch, but you're most def ok with that.

Speaking about the prices, if you really want to buy a living in the centre of the town, near the Heeregracht or Prinschegracht I think you should be thinking about puttin down a slight million euros or more for a decent house, which is nearly inpossible to find... (yes those small, not evenly lined, houses near the canals)
But it depends on how you would like to live, if you wanna go for a cheap restplace - you should be looking for an appartment-like house a little outside the centre.
But if you're really about to settle in holland I suggest to buy a slightly bigger house at the outerside of the town (where its a lil more peaceful and easygoing, while you still have the possibility to travel to the centre which is really simple.)

Anyway, I should just investigate a lil more about amsterdam if I were you, I do not live there, like 20 miles away. but there are always a lot of tourists and have always been like that, so noone there would be impressed that someone from outside the netherlands would live there. They're quite used to it.

Oh and about the wood furniture bussiness.. I have really NO CLUE man ;P sorry..

I only know they have a fine market for greens ;) But it's a big city, you should be ok.

Can't speak for amsterdam, but usually public transport in the Netherlands is good. I've had a couple of belgian trains simply not arrive at the station, whereas dutch trains have been late for about 15 mins at the most, at that has only happened once in 1.5 years I've been living here. I haven't taken a lot of busses, but they seem to be alright aswell. I'd suggest buying a cheapass bike aswell, as theres a road for bikes just about everywhere, and the ground is mostly flat, so it isn't that hard to use a bike. Not to mention it'll save gas.
And I'd also recommend moving somewhere slightly out of town, as you won't want all your money to go to rent :P
I've got no idea about the wood thing.

Yea you should definately get a bike once your in Holland, it's def my favourite transport, and if it gets stolen, don't worry, steal one yoursefl. I belief they once counted that every 5 minutes a bicycle is being stolen in amsterdam :P. But Amsterdam is one of the only cities in holland thats familliar with trams (dunno if that's also the english translation.. I mean like subways above the ground) anyway, those are (nearly) always on time and travel throughout the whole city. Same for the busses.
As far as I can say I guess the public transport is good. You're not bound to own a car.

About the houses again, there is quite a shortcoming of houses IN amsterdam, means its quite hard to get one plus will cost a fair price. Although in the few cities near amsterdam, it might be easier to get a living, while you can still easily be in amsterdam within 20 minutes... '

(ps; the outer-towns also have coffeeshops.. )

I believe that the government (unofficially) uses the rule of one coffeeshop per 5000 people. Just to give you an idea.
Could be wrong, but it seems about right. You can always use the coffeeshop database to look if there's a coffeeshop nearby your (future) house/flat.

nah thats just bullcrap, the government has this gedoogbeleid and it basicly means that as long as nobody talks about weed there's no problem. in amsterdam there are a LOT of friggin shops, but whereas i live, in limburg, southeastern border, there's like 3 shops per (big) town and some towns with just 1, mostly for germans. as long as you stay in west there's bound to be a shop every 10 minutes.

btw that coffeeshop database is rubbish, might be good for the populair shops, which mainly focus on tourists, if you want good, or more than good weed and hasj the best thing to do is talk to a local in a shop and ask him, there are a lot of shops in amsterdamn with just crap. and a lot with excellent powerfull, tasty, strong as fuck weed.
