Save the children

Post by puffpuffpass »

O.K. guys,

I have a few issues.

Setup:
I started some seeds in a small pot on my window sill which resulted in three sprouts. I recently moved them into 2 gallon buckets which I drilled for drainage. I used some dirt from my back yard which I grew in outside successfully before and also added some soil I bought to the mix. I have 4 4' 40W fluorescent bulbs hanging above them, I stared at the bulb selection at Home Depot for some time and decided on ones that said they were exactly like sunlight on the box.

Problem:
The sprouts stretched a bit while on the window sill but were healthy and standing on there own. When I transplanted them they all went limp and laid down. Two are now slowly recovering however the one looks real weak, it is recovering a bit but still cant stand by it’s self (I have it staked) I think I may have over watered when I transplanted them but have not since. I know there is a period of shock after transplanting but we are going into the 3rd day in the new setup now and there still sick.

Questions:
Are they going to be O.K.? Is this a normal shock reaction? Could it have to do with the low temp in the basement (60 to 70F)? Will my lights be sufficient?

Screaming in agony:
HELP ME!!!!! I love my plants and want them to grow up big and strong, please someone tell me it’s all O.K.

Thank you I know you guys will help me out. Peace
But could it be a grand joke

I'm pretty sure that your plants will be fine. I think they might be flaccid (heh he) due to the transplant and the addition of the soil. Like you said, they might be going into a shock factor.

After you watered them liberally that one time did you just continue to water them as normal or did you derive them of water afterwords?

Don't overdo the water especially after transplanting. Give the plants some time, talk to them, and show 'em some love. Keep in mind plants go through heavy shock when you transplant them and even more of a shock when the light source changes and the temp drops. Try keeping the AC a little warmer and don't water again till the soil dries a bit.

You would have been better off finding some better bulbs. They might cost a little more but it's well worth it.

That's what I was thinking, the shock is incredibly intense, then he added new soil and blah blah.

Puffpuffpass, lay low on the watering and make sure your light source is good. Try and keep the room temperature around 80..I think.

Between 70-80 would be betterbut just try to keep it at a stady temperature. The more the temperature varies the more those stems are gonna stretch.
