Just as influential leaders on both sides of the great Muslim/Non Muslim-west divide were repairing the damage done by the recent Mohammed cartoons, the British News of the World(weekly tabloid newspaper) published evidence of yet more disgraceful behavior by the very men entrusted with restoring law and order to the war ravaged Iraqi wasteland: THE SOLDIERS. A video featuring several members of the British Light Infantry Unit, beating the hell out of defenseless Iraqi youths, was the base for this embarrassing and damaging story which has found its way, much like the cartoon debacle, to every corner of the globe in super fast record time…how wonderful to have such global media coverage/exposure?
The LI (light infantry) made the short film in 2004, when they were responsible for security in Amara(a volatile town North of Basra in the Maysan province of Iraq). For those who haven’t had the bitter experience of seeing the images run their brutal course on a screen I will give a brief outline of what takes place..
7 or 8 members of the Light Infantry unit are seen to be kicking and punching several Iraqi civilians, who were apparently seized after rioting in the Basra region. These civilians are NOT putting up a fight, in fact they can be heard begging for the soldiers to stop pounding the fuck out of them. The chap who made the video, can also be heard; mainly encouraging the cruelty but also laughing at what he obviously perceived to be a humorous situation. It’s a Shame the poor lads getting savaged by a gang of ill disciplined evil pricks, couldn’t share the producer’s comic appreciation.

I have this theory about the army, moreover inre: legal professions which allow violence. Some people are naturally more violent than others whether that be due to a. hardship of life, b. genes or c. a predisposition towards Evil. Now out of this large group of ‘violent’ people, there are many who also possess enough intelligence/awareness to marry their violent streak with a well paid career i.e. there are positions which EXPECT/TRAIN people to be comfortable with violence, for a variety of reasons. For example, to be successful Mike Tyson needs different skills to Jack Bauer, but BOTH get PAID to be legally violent. Where the fuck was this going???Yes, I’ve got it….War doesn’t seem like a attractive job for many of us, but there are considerable numbers who enjoy shooting/killing/violence and a large proportion of these people will join the armed forces. If you were an Admissions officer for the army, would you turn away all applicants who seemed like psychopaths???Or would you see brutish tendencies towards violence as a pre-requisite for the JOB???
Basically, in all legalized violence industries there is a high number of nasty bastards.
I am almost certain that the soldiers featured in the film will be singled out and punished accordingly by the British Ministry of Defense, but still, the small amount of respect that I had for the British troops has noticeably diminished, and if that’s how I feel as a British Sicilian, then how the fuck do the Iraqis feel? not just bad, but fiercely angry, probably to the point of joining the nearest militia and taking some revenge on the coalition forces. and who would blame them? I wouldn’t, but that’s not to say that I think that is the ‘right way to react’…but really, what would you do, if you’re country was occupied by foreigners who beat the fuck out of kids??
I’m getting carried away and starting to sound decidedly anti-British, which I’m not, I’m just anti-‘army men who abuse people they are supposed to be looking after’..
So what I need to see, as does the world, is Swift and acceptable punishment, handed out to those sick bastards..
Just a side note to add that I do think the British army is generally respectable, and I have nothing but admiration for many wars they have waged, just not this one, or the Afghanistan conflict, those two fell far short of ‘justifiable’. In fact those two wars exasperated my growing contempt for military decision makers, because there are other places in the world where the British army could so some serious GOOd e.g. Sudan. Lets stick the army over there and see if they can actually SAVE some lives rather than kill/maim/destroy….but I want to make it clear: I HAVE RESEPCT FOR MANY BRITISH MILITARY PERSONNEL, because without the previous efforts to keep Britain British, I would be a German and that thought can never be too far from my mind when I start attacking our war efforts(I say OUR as no matter how hard I try, I cant help but contribute via my taxes)..

It is important for Bush to secure some positive links in the region(South America); Hugo Chavez, the Venezuelan leader, who remains stalwart in his anti American stance and closely tied to both Fidel Castro and Mr. Morales, recently called on his people to ‘launch a counter-attack against US imperialism’. Donnie Rumsfield added his own brand of ‘diplomacy’; by comparing Mr. Chavez to Adolph Hitler, only to be met with this reply:
‘"The imperialist, mass murdering, fascist attitude of the president of the United States doesn't have limits," Chavez said. "I think Hitler could be a nursery baby next to George W Bush."..
Chavez and Castro are long-term enemies(of the US) but Morales remains untainted and perhaps reachable by greasy US hands of ‘friendship’… The Bolivian leader responded to Bush’s message with a suggestion of mano a mano dialogue inre: a reduction of US trade barriers……
Elections in Nepal turned out a paltry 10% of the population, which is hardly enough to give more than a glimpse of the true political picture. Such a low showing at the polls was due to King Gyanendra’s disgracefully dictator-like behaviour, which he felt necessary to re-impose and restart with the help of the military, last February(2005). I wonder if there can be any solution or even, I hesitate to say, democracy, without some form of violence i.e. a king with an army to do his bidding(though some may be linked with the Maoist rebels/other opposition groups), ruling over a population who disagree on fundamental grounds with both the King’s justification for ruling and also the decisions/policies he enforces, gives a recipe for disaster…
A report by the UN Commission for Human Rights has called for the notorious American detention centre at Guantanamo Bay, to be closed. Part of the report found that’ treatment of prisoners sometimes amounting to torture’ was clearly common-place. Information was gleamed through 18 months of interviewing freed Guantanamo prisoners(NO access to current detainees was granted), Guantanamo doctors and lawyers(with association to X/current prisoners). UN special rapporteur on torture, Manfred Nowak, said “We concluded that the situation in several areas violates international law and conventions on human rights and torture”.
Humiliation, forced shaving, and exposure to extremes of heat/cold were some of the techniques used at Guantanamo which are banned by the UN’s convention(convention -A practice or procedure widely observed in a group, especially to facilitate social interaction; a custom)against torture. The force feeding of detainees engaged in hunger strike campaigns, also highlighted by the report, was said to be not only unsavoury but downright evil.
So the United Nations have told America that its very specially located( it doesn’t come under US courts jurisdiction… essentially, Guantanamo is exempt from an laws apart from those imposed by the army who run it) torture camp must be closed. Now we find ourselves in a situation which perfectly illustrates my concerns for” who really runs the show? The US or the UN????”
Why do I ask? because the US reaction to the report's findings/recommendations was dismissive..
A Pentagon official said this:”All detainees at Guantanamo are being treated humanely and are being provided with excellent medical care”. Which makes no sense at all really, unless you consider ‘excellent medical care’ to include force feeding shackled men through pipes stuck up their nasal cavities (and worse).
Why the fuck is it okay for the US to ignore the UN’s demands inre: Guantanamo, but it is the UN who the US are asking to punish(or for permission to punish) Iran, and for what???for non-compliance with UN demands. That stinks like a dead skunk who died of HYPOCRACY..
Sweden has cheered me up very suddenly and sharply by declaring their (his/her?) aim to become the world’s first oil-free economy. It may well take up to 15 years, but through intelligent research/investment into renewable energy sources, national ‘save the earth’ campaigns and a unusual solidarity between government and commerce, the Swedes seem to be well on their way: in 2003 26% of all Sweden’s energy was produced from renewable sources. The EU average is 6%. I think we could all learn a thing or two from the Swedes, whether that be how to save the planet or the reasons behind Sweden’s terrible lack of talented singers since Death Metal outfit, Abba, were killed by a polar bear at a concert in Greenland.

As you can imagine there is much more important news to report from this last week of mayhem, but I simply cant do it. A recent study into elephant behaviour has confirmed my long-held suspicion that ‘it’s just never good to kill one of those beasts, because they will hunt you down and kill you’. Not like jean Reno in assassin but kind of like the incredible Hulk. In the last two years, villages in Uganda(Africa) have sustained a sharp rise in elephant stampede attacks; in which a herd of elephants literally stomps a village completely and irreversibly flat. Also, there is evidence to suggest that the often warm-natured giants can suffer long term psychological disorders(just like humans) after experiencing tragedy/adversity in youth..for example:
A 3 year old elephant sees its mother shot and cut to pieces. As he grows up he shows nothing short of rancour towards all human beings, and maybe even towards the world as a whole…
Elephants, just leave them the fuck alone...or really, you deserve to be stomped
The ‘stampede attacks’ are said, by experts, to be directly motivated by revenge( for the poaching).
