Violence in videogames

Post by Funk Doctor »

Do you think videogames can affect kids? Should violent videogames be banned, or at least regulated?

Discuss!

I think parents who allow 6 year old kids to play quake 3 should be banned. not the video-games. Parents protesting against violent games should wake the fuck up and start raising them damn kids propper! My dad forced me to bring back Carmagedon 2 when I bought it...I was like erm 10 or something. And if ur old enough and you choose to play those games well you can.

Any parent that lets their kid play adult videogames when they are below the age of 12 should b stopped as i believe that they can give kids wacky ideas to try out in the real world. I think that once the kid reaches 12, they should be mature enough to be allowed 2 play some 18 or M video games, depending on what is contained in them. But all in all, its up 2 the parents, the know their kids and whether they are mature enough.

It *is* up to the parents but the thing is that because so many parents dont play the games they cant guage wether it is suitable for there kids so that is why they label them so the parents can assess if it is suitable for thee child, many children are well enough equiped to play more adult videogames, I have been playing videogames all my life and quite violent ones too, and it hasn't affected me, I am pretty hard to fire up and have good control so i really think that parents should try it first to determine wither its suitable, then you can laugh at how crap your parents are and give them tips, and then yo have fun and they do too, so then they will let you play them.

THe parents definately have to take the time too view the material, before condeming or accepting it. I agree that it totally doesn't affect some kids, but other children seeking "acceptance" and "power" through these games make take it more seriously. Self esteem and vulnerability play a big roll here.

I agree with Azim there, alot of the parents don't know what the games are about. I don't think you can totally lay it on them tbh, not that many games actually contain a legal certificate, most of them (in this country atleast) just have that EU recomended thing on the back and that isn't always to do with content alone, sometimes they are in the EU 15+ cat but that is just cuz its a difficult strategy game or whatever.
I do think they affect kids, but in different ways at different ages. If you gave a 3 year old GTA3 and let them play it into adulthood and no one ever told them what they see in the game shouldn't ever be repeated, goodness knows what would happen. Its an extreme example but if you think about it that way it must be having an effect. I'd have thought kids of an older age (teens) would know better so if they started repeating what they saw in the game then they would likely be disturbed in another way. If you gets me? :?

I know that children do have a hard time accepting reality from fiction and they copy what they see!

Heres the plan!

I feel the guy who works at the game store needs to be better educated by his employer about the games so he can better educate the parents of the potential risks. Besides he's overpaid and just stands behind the counter all day anyway. GET OFF YOUR LAZY ASS AND HELP SOMEONE FREAK!
