you could like poke the person and they would just go 'kaboom'

A shotgun is a shotgun because of the types of shells you put into it. It's also a shotgun because of the shot pattern that is put out by it.
Same goes as for why every gun is not called a shotgun.
A shotgun is used for short distance shot. [Ex:] You shoot a coffe can at close distance and you will
blast the thing apart, however if you shoot at a barn building from a fair distance away you will do hardly any damage to it.
A Rifle is used for long shots. 100-400 yards away usually. A rifle is more prescise then a shotgun, but only one bullet is fired as to where a shotgun shoots off multiple beebees.
A pistol shoots in the same manner as a rifle but is used in shorter confrontations. A pistol can be fired faster then a rifle as well, because rifles are usually lever action, or bolt action. A pistol is usually semi auto or revolver style.

So...what's the correlation between close range and the word shot? Between long range and the word rifle, etc.?

I think it relaxes the muscles in your body

I've noticed that too.

Yeah I've also notice that. Somebody put the right answer; it relaxes your muscles. I always prefer to get my bathroom stuff out before I smoke, as opposed to after.
