Im sorry to hear that, losing a child has to be one of the harder things to cope with, especially an unexpected case like a car crash. My cousin died the same way and that was the toughest funeral I have ever been to. Anyway, take care and godspeed.

Depression can be prevented as long as you keep all your Sim's need levels in the green areas.

Although the term depression is vague because there are in fact multiple types of depression all of which can be treated in different fashions. Cognitive behavioral therapy has been shown to be effective, as have tricyclics, MAOIs, SSRIs, and in some cases stimulants (dexidrine). Although I don't necessarly folllow one clear path or another when it comes to treating this disease I do believe that this is an actual illness characterized by abnormal levels of neurotransmitters in the brain caused by repeated exposure to certain events that propel an individual into a gloomy and miserable existence.

That is only the voice of Reason if you view Science as Reason. 'charactarized by repeated neuronal firing that causes a sort of rewiring in the brain that can be cured/treated with a wide variety of different medications/treatments. '...my family dies in a horrible fire, all burned to death, my beloved ratdog son included, i go see a doctor, and he tells me that bullshit...i cut his throat. As he is saying 'what we need to do is stop these neurons firing'...

Humans have a long history. People have always been depressed. Sometimes, I concede, due to a physically fucked up brain. But much more often than not, depression is caused by extreme trauma. Science can see what depression looks like, in the brain, and also use drugs to alter the brain to make people less depressed, but that is far away, a different fucking world, from addressing the TRUE cause of the depression. As mentioned, i am well aware that some people's brains are simply not put together Right. And those brains can cause allsorts of problems. But from my experience...of myself, and others...depression comes from Externally connected events, most definitely NOT, a damaged brain. The misfiring neurons is merely a snapshot of how the brain deals with depression and the trauma that has caused the depression. In a person who has never been depressed before, has no history of depression in the family, who gets depressed, due to an obvious trauma, this sciencentific evaluation of the brain is pointless. As a fellow human capable of gaining the trust of the depressed person, speaking with them, trying to encourage them to regain hope and fervour for existence, is much nmore useful, than a scientist studying their fucking brain activity. Its akin to a man punching me in the face, and a doctor addressing only the swelling...what the hell happens when i encounter the guy again???

Depression to me, is primarily about feelings, close to it, can come the mind's meanderings. Everytime I have suffered from depression, i have a very clear idea of WHY I AM DEPRESSED...and I revert to my own remedies, which are giving my body decent fuel, as nobody can feel good, if they eat shit and dont care for their physical state. The physical body is very connected to the emotional, mental and spiritual body. Secondly, I seek out loving company. Not necessarily to speak with them about my issues, but to simply be around love...but love is something which science takes a stab at explaining, again, through observation and analysis of the brain. More to it than that. Much more to it.

Ah Dan, how we see eye to eye and stand on the opposite spectrum of such issues always amazes me. Nice post, but nueroscience and psychoanalytic techniques such as finding a comforting person to talk to and delve into your problems with are both types of scientific endeavor. While I feel that the former is much more objective than the latter in terms of statistical significance; the psychoanayltic approach that you seem to be fond of has been under great scrutiny and praise since it's introduction in the mid to late 19th century. Regardless of which path you wish to follow, trained professionals are nonetheless constatnly refining and updating their methods based upon "scientific" discovery.

In a sesne I imagine it comes down to what type of person the victim of a depressive episode falls prey to. When I was an adolescent I was sent to counslers for what appeared to be behavioral isses, perhaps some of it was depression they speculated. My god how I absolutely hated talking to people about my perceived so called "problems" that I had. In my opinion they were a bunch of quacks who were asking me pointless questions about things I could care less to tell to other people. Well enough of this psychoanalytic bullshit I told myself when I was eighteen. I decided to go see a M.D. and try and figure out a logical, concise, and scientific reason behind the way that my brain decided to make me feel. Turns out it was as simple as taking one pill a night in the evenings and all of my "head" issues seemed to go away.

Furthermore I only took the meds for about six months and weaned myself off of them. After what I considered abnormal levels of nuerotransmitters in my brain coming back to their respective levels I felt at ease, peace and happy with the world. Talking with people who said they cared, but nonetheless I have never met these people before in my life put my as a skeptic when it came to sitting down and "talking" about my feelings with people. Perhaps that is just my personality? As mentioned, everyone is different and everyone responds to varying treatments accordingly.

I have to agree with Dan on this one... Not all things can be objectified, quantified, measured, or at least, not all things should be, or need to be... There are some things that Science just should not try to explain...

Like Dan, I believe that feelings are more than just chemical balances in the brain... they are linked with your soul, your spirit, personality, what makes you You.

I could probably go on, but i'm not really in the mood to do so, so i'll just conclude with saying that I absolutely love reading your words Dan. You have a way of seeing things, of seeing the world, that i find very rare.. it's refreshing.

I have to say that I actually agree with both of you. To me, one of the most important parts of Chris' post was the second paragraph. There are simply different types of depression. In the example you gave about your family dying in a horrible fire, it is very likely that you would not suffer from a depressive disorder as a consequence. One of the most important things to point out is that feeling depressed is simply not the same thing as suffering from depression or having a depressive disorder. Therefore in such a situation a doctor simply would not discuss the neurotransmitters firing in your brain, because this would not be the case. This is why I argue that you guys are indeed both right... you are simply describing two different things. Technically, when people say that they feel depressed, "low", or "down", they are experiencing a depressed mood. Usually, like your example (though yours is slightly more extreme), these feelings are based on a temporary situation and fade quickly when the situation changes. Say your example did indeed happen (god forbid), it is quite likely that as the years pass, you would become stronger and potentially even recuperate through natural means. The same cannot be said for those who suffer from real depression... Medication may indeed be the only solution for some, in severe cases. Just as another example, people may feel down and sad around the holidays when they believe others are enjoying closeness and pleasant companionship. These feelings, though unpleasant, are quite different from the feeling of being under a black cloud that accompanies a serious depressive episode or major depressive disorder. This is where studying the brain actually plays an important role. One can argue all they want about how feeling depressed is indeed the same thing as a permanent "depressive disorder", however like you pointed out, there is simply no need to study the brain when someone becomes depressed after their spouse dies. On the other hand, it has been proven that there is merit to studying brain patterns when people are suffering from a depressive disorder.

Various kinds of life experiences can lead to a temporary depressed mood. People use the term depression to describe the sadness that comes from a death in the family. After the death of someone they care about deeply, most survivors experience a "depressed mood" that is usually called grief. Other kinds of life events like losing a job, being turned down for a graduate program or losing everything in a fire may also bring out a depressed mood. These types of feelings are not severe enough to be called a mood disorder, they are classified as an adjustment disorder with a depressed mood. Unlike a simple depressed mood, actual depression has a strong hereditary component as well as other "sciency" factors which need to be taken into consideration. For instance, someone who has a hereditary line of depression is 8 times more likely to suffer from a depressive order than others. Life events, or environmental factors can indeed create depression in an individual, but as stated depression tends to affect those who were already vulnerable to acquire such a "disease".

All in all, I hope you see where I am coming from. While I agree that science does not cover every area when it comes to discussing depression, suffering from a depressed mood is simply not the same thing as suffering from a depressive disorder. That's where you two got your wires crossed. You are both extremely right with what you said, you were just not describing the same type of depression.
I saw on TV today, this man lost his son, his son died...
So he had him cremated, took his ashes, and then made it into a Diamond ring...
Now he watches his son shine every day.
I just thought about that, while I sit here ashing in this ashtray...
