Or... you know...
not knowing it's going to collapse? You make it seem like they purposefully sold faulty land which is VERRRRRY likely NOT the case at all. Things like this happen, but it's not something anyone really watches out for, or expects to ever happen.

Well, usually land doesn't get sold without having it checked for quality, you know soil tests, water tests etc....
I would assume that when you build a city, especially in parts where volcano's were very active, you would take your time and check everything out before building a city there.
So if they had done proper research they would have realized they'd need to solve issues like those tunnels in order to keep everything as safe as possible.
Just saying dude, money is central and more important than human life to some.
Computer games don't affect kids. I mean, if Pac-Man had affected us as kids, we would all be running around darkened rooms, munching magic pills, and listening to repetitive electronic music.

It would, things like sonar get used to see if there aren't any caverns or whatever underneath the surface, I was just talking about doing research in general to see if a piece of land is worthy or stable enough to be built on.

^ you never know how deep down that pocket could have been though, for all we know that could be a thousand feet down and was thought to be stable, and some sort of natural disaster caused another natural disaster.

It's about 330ft deep, and 60 ft across.flyinhigh wrote:what i really want to know is how deep is it? and are they going to spelunking?
And Flow, the city, which is now Guatemala City is over 900 years old, and became a capital city metropolis in the late 1700's. Point being; people have been living there well before the emergence of ground-penetrating radar, which is the only real way of detecting a sinkhole other than literally drilling holes in the ground, until you find holes in the ground.

I agree, it's an ancient city, but that still does not justify the fact that they didn't bother to check the land they were building on,what 20 years ago, when the technology was definitely available?
If I ever build a house of my own you can be damned sure I'm checking every cubic inch for water/air pockets or anything that might sink my house...
