Hahahahahahahahahahahaha you make me laugh. Medical science is proven to work, that's why people should be prescribed pills. My girlfriend who I love with every little atom in my body would be DEAD if it weren't for antidepressents. Prescriptions don't work? Tell that to her. Tell that to every single person who's attempted suicide and been prescribed antidepressants and magically don't want to die any more.Weedguru_Falkon wrote:But why should you be prescribed something? It makes shit worse, it really does.
Because:
It makes you realise that you HAVE to be taking them to be happy and that theres no other way. Even for temporary periods of prescription.
Something that wasn't a pill got you depressed, so something that isn't a pill should make you happy.
Prescriptions are fake. The government tells us that speed is bad, yeah? Well, they prescribe speed to kids with ADD or ADHD. Some of these kids get hooked from it. Its the truth, because i did. i was in 8th fucking grade when i was on that shit and got addicted to it.
My point is, it doesnt matter if a doctor prescribes you something. That doesn't mean the medicine will make your "faults" go away. There is no miracle pill that will cure depression. Its an emotion, just like love, just like hatred, just like joy.
There are things in life that can sway those emotions that arent chemicals that are fed to you by some professional drug dealer.
Open your eyes. Doctors exist for a reason. Just because you're scared of the idea of little pills being able to change your personality does not make it wrong for them to be prescribed.
DEPRESSION IS NOT AN EMOTION! It's a mental illness! God damn! How many times is this going to be repeated in this thread! It's a chemical inbalance in the brain and it's not as simple as "feeling down in the dumps". Grow up people... do some reading for jeeb's sake...
edit: Can I get some support here? I can't be the only person on this board who agrees with the Canadian Medical Journal...
edit 2: FYI, aderoll and dexedrin are either banned or are very close to it. Doctors rarely prescribe stuff like that any more. The only people who get regular doses of it are fighter pilots for (lots of countries') airforces and navies.

Well actually depression isn't really such a clean cut thing to diagnose or pin point the cause of. A lot of people will put it down to chemical imbalance in the brain however this is merely one aspect of the biological explanation of the cause of depression. Another explanation the biological model of depression throws up is genetics, suggesting that depression is inherited from our parents. The biological approach generally says that psychological problems are caused by biological factors and should therefore be treated as a physical rather than emotional disease, through the use of drugs and in some extreme cases elctro-shock therapy (as seen in requiem for a dream).
The social learning theory suggests people learn both adaptive and maladaptive ways of managing stress and responding to life problems within their family, educational, social and work environments. Basically saying in laments terms that it is environmental factors and up-bringing that cause depression. For example if a kid grows up in a pessimistic environment, in which discouragement is common an encouragement is rseldom, that child will develop a vulnerability to depression. The social learning theory suggest learning and adapting new, more positive attitudes and ways to cope with life through usually through councelling.
The Cognitive theory suggests that some form of learned helplessness leading to frustration is the cause of depression. A psychologist, Aaron Beck, says that 'inappropriate attributions and inferences directly contribute to depression and that depressed persons are particularly susceptible to errors in thinking - in particular - logical errors that lead them to see things in an unfavourable manner by -
1. Drawing a conclusion even though there is little or no evidence to support it.
2. Focussing on an insignificant detail of a situation while ignoring the more important features.
3. Drawing global conclusions about ability on the basis of a single fact or episode.
4. Committing gross eroors of evaluation by magnifying small, unfavourable events, yet minimising important large and favourable events.
5. Taking personal responsibility for events that are situational.'
(It should be noted a combination of the above can be quite likely.)
Also there are varying types of depression, Major Depression, Atypical Depression, Psychotic Depression, Dysthymia and Bi-polar Disorder (Manic Depression) to name but a few.
Major depression is prolly one of the most common types of depression. You probs know someone who suffers from it. The person seems to walk around with the weight of the world on his or her shoulders. Thry seem uninterested in becoming involved in regular activities and seems convinced that he or she will always be useless and stuck in this hopeless state. There is a lack of interest in sexual activity and in appetite and weight loss.
Atypical depression is a variation of depression that is slightly different from major depression. The sufferer is sometimes able to experience happiness and moments of elation. Symptoms of atypical depression include fatigue, oversleeping, overeating n weight gain. People who suffer from atypical depression believe that outside events control their mood (i.e. success, attention and praise). Episodes of atypical depression can last for months although a sufferer may live with it forever.
Victims of psychotic depression begin to hear and see imaginary things eg. sounds, voices and visuals that do not exist. These are referred to as hallucinations, which are generally more common with someone suffering from schizophrenia. The hallucinations are not "positive" like they are with a manic depressive. The sufferer of psychotic depression imagines frightening and negative sounds and images. This is the elast common form of dpression.
Many people just walk around seeming miserable, simply sad, blue or melancholic. They have been this way all of their lives. This is dysthymia, a condition that people are not even aware of but just live with daily. They go through life feeling unimportant, unsatisfied, frightened and simply don't enjoy their lives. Medication is supposedly beneficial for this type of depression although I'd argue otherwise.
Bi-polar disorder, AKA. Manic depression, can be defined as an emotional disorder characterized by changing mood shifts from depression to mania which can sometimes be quite rapid. One minute they're on top of the world the next they are suicidal. Hallucinations are uncommon but not unheard of in Bi-polar disorder patients. Unfortunately, people who suffer from manic depression have an extremely high rate of suicide.
Just thought I would eliminate some of the misconceptions people have about what depression actually is and shed a bit of light on the subject. Personally I would steer well clear of any pills or medicine they try give you, it is commonly known that many anti-depressants have negative side effects, such depression, (if u doon't believe me read the small print or check out google) the very thing you're trying to get rid of. Also once you feel better and stop taking the drugs a relapse is extremely common so it is better to tackle it by other means. You don't want to develop a dependence on any drug to make you happy.
Hope that was a bit of use to someone,
peace xx

The problems with antidepressants start when you are already suicidal. When you're so depressed you want to kill youself chances are you don't even have the energy or motivation to implement your suicide plans. You just can't be bothered and would rather just lie in bed and forget the rest of the world exists. Forget you exist and just lie there.
Antidepressants give patients energy. They give patients energy before they take away their suicidal tendencies. You can see where im going with this. Often, it ends poorly. Which is why I think patients should be hospitalized and then given their medication.
Unfortunately, well I can only speak about people with bipolar disorder because that's the one I know best, from friends and family who have it, bipolar patients are notorious for not taking their meds and often they slip back into the vicious cycle of mania and depression. The pills don't always work. But they're worth a shot, at least.
They've worked for those I hold dearest to my heart and that's enough proof for me to believe they work.

Just because your depressed doesn't necessarily make you want to commit suicide. Some people just feel like shit all the time and the way they feel, and I think Falkon was just saying that if you don't have a depression that you ABSOLUTELY need pills so you don't feel like shit then you shouldn't take them because there is too much of a risk you'll get hooked on anti-depressants and only because you don't feel a good mood a lot.
Here's my conclusion, If you don't Need anti-depression pills then don't get them prescribed to you. Just try to find a different non addicting way to make yourself feel better.
