The term came from south london, its basically a little street kid (gypsy) who hangs around all day not going to school, but the media got hold of and started calling anyone from a council estate or 'poor' area it.

a chav isn't comparable to a gangsta.
A gangsta is someone who dresses all expensive with the jewelry, and listens to shitty hip-hop like 50 cent and the game and stuff. A chav is someone who typicaly wears cheap clothing like nike tracksuits and wears a cap pointing 60 degrees up from flat.
I got friends that dress kind of like this, and i can call them scum, chavs wankers whatever and get away with it simply cause they aren't real chavs. Real chavs from the south speak like they are from south london, no matter where they are from and how well brought up and rich they are. They say things like "oh my days", "and "enda day right" and often call their mates bruv or blud. A chavs preferred form of transport is a 50cc moped or a hatchback with just enough pointless shit welded to it it looks tacky.
They like Happy Hardcore, Garage, Grime, shit hip hop which they listen to in their hatchbacks with bass so high it distorts the actual music. God forbid they might even like a bit of drum and bass, meaning they go to the raves im at and get pilled up on shitty 8 for £10 "e pills" and dance like twats in a way intended to start fights (flailing arms generally looking like pricks). If they hit you you might just get away with giving them a barge back or a dirty look (assuming they are on their own). But when they comedown and happen to see you alone when they are with their mates, true chavs will do their best to start a fight with you, on the grounds that you stepped out of line earlier in the club by interupting their stupid little dance. In a club you can always tell a chav from someone who just likes sports branded stuff buy how they wear it, a chav will either have a hoodie on with the hood up over their cap like its really cold, or take their shirt off and tuck it into their trousers like it's really hot. When one of them takes their shirt off the whole lot will, i think when one of them decides to do it they all join in like it suddenly became not gay to take your shirt off in a club like the video to "Relax" or something.
Oh yeah and if you've got long hair and wear piercings or lots of black they shout at those people in the streets and call them goths.
I dont see why anyone would think chavs are gangsta, i call them scum of our country.
I cant say these kids are definatly chavs cause like i say ive got mates that dress a little like this and are pretty sound but judging by the fact that the whole group dresses the same i'd say they are the regular scum.

A gangsta, by definition, is a member of a gang. Yeah they usually dress expensive as hell, but gangstas can listen to good rap.
