The History of Coca Cola

In May, 1886, Coca Cola was invented by Doctor John Pemberton a pharmacist from Atlanta, Georgia. John Pemberton concocted the Coca Cola formula in a three legged brass kettle in his backyard. The name was a suggestion given by John Pemberton's bookkeeper Frank Robinson.

Being a bookkeeper, Frank Robinson also had excellent penmanship. It was he who first scripted "Coca Cola" into the flowing letters which has become the famous logo of today.

The soft drink was first sold to the public at the soda fountain in Jacob's Pharmacy in Atlanta on May 8, 1886.

About nine servings of the soft drink were sold each day. Sales for that first year added up to a total of about $50. The funny thing was that it cost John Pemberton over $70 in expanses, so the first year of sales were a loss.

Until 1905, the soft drink, marketed as a tonic, contained extracts of cocaine as well as the caffeine-rich kola nut.

By the late 1890s, Coca-Cola was one of America's most popular fountain drinks. With another Atlanta pharmacist, Asa Griggs Candler, at the helm, the Coca-Cola Company increased syrup sales by over 4000% between 1890 and 1900. Advertising, was an important factor in Pemberton and Candler's success and by the turn of the century, the drink was sold across the United States and Canada. Around the same time, the company began selling syrup to independent bottling companies licensed to sell the drink. Even today, the US soft drink industry is organized on this principle.

Until the 1960s, both small town and big city dwellers enjoyed carbonated beverages at the local soda fountain or ice cream saloon. Often housed in the drug store, the soda fountain counter served as a meeting place for people of all ages. Often combined with lunch counters, the soda fountain declined in popularity as commercial ice cream, bottled soft drinks, and fast food restaurants came to the fore.

On April 23, 1985, the trade secret "New Coke" formula was released. Today, products of the Coca Cola Company are consumed at the rate of more than one billion drinks per day.

Huge drop in Coca-Cola sales reported for fourth quarter; weak North America sales blamed
Coca-Cola reported a 36% drop in earnings this past quarter. The drop is blamed on poor soda sales in North America. Coca-Cola is confident that they will improve earnings by launching an energy drink and a line of flavored bottled waters. Got that from some news site

Caffeine isn't energy, it just wakes you up. Its full of sugar though.

A guy I know drank 4-6 litres of the stuff a day since he was about 14, now 21. Hes been told he can never drink alcohol again, no spicey food and nothing strongly acidic as the coke acid has burned his stomach lining off (or something. Serves him right, I'm suprised thats all that happened, I'd have thought that amount would do much worse than that.

4-6 LITERS!!!!!!!

damn, i might go through 2 bottled cokes a day, but i couldnt imagine drinking that much everyday.

I know when i was still in H.S i drank a can coke before school and at least one bottled coke throughout the day. I decided to cut back, and that first week of not drinking any coke caused me to have a fucking bad headache. i was having coke withdrawl.

Yeah its pretty addictive stuff, sugar rush and caffeine is addictive in its own right. Thats probably how he ended up at that amount. I thought it was bollocks at first, don't know how he could even keep that much down, never mind actually function after it. He did seem to be on msn 24hrs a day though. And hes a really big fat guy which isn't suprising considering how many callories there are in the stuff.

Yeah I was gonna ask what kind of physical shape he's in.
I can't drink any type of pop/soda anymore. I gave it up and haven't had it in months cuz I know it's bad for you. Now when I try, I can't even drink a full can.

Yeah water is the shit. I drink like 6 or 7 big glasses each day, though you're supposed to have more than that. If I don't have so much, I get all drowsy and dead. It makes you look like you're in better shape than you really are too, cuz when you work out, muscles produce creatine which absorbs water!

Just felt like ranting...

*goes to get more water*
