While i agree that a lot of americans are ignorant beyond belief... ok ok... most are! It doesnt help that America's one eyed all controlling media report on one thing and one thing only... America... or Americans (in their two page world section)
Living in Australia, i am used to vast, and diverse amount of information, and it wasnt until i was in America that i realised how hard it is to come by information about the rest of the world (esp if you dont have the internet at home) which i didnt. I used to skip out on Math class and go sit on the computers so i could read the Age newspaper online.
So many people in America are just brought up through the belief that the rest of the world doesnt affect them so why bother to know about it. A lot of kids dont even know things about the other side of their country and continent let alone the world....
Not trying to make excuses for them, because they should get off their lazy asses and find out about the world... But the American Media should take considerable blame...
I think 80 percent of what I have to learn at geoghrapy class (beside physical geography (like earthspecies etc)) is about the how the world OUTSIDE the country effects living here. Which might not seem to be, but really is an important issue to know about the world and things that happen around just your own land. It clears up confusion whether something is weird or normal in the enviroment of people that live somewhere else. And knowledge about this subject helps taking away huge stereotype thoughts. Since global media and communication its not anymore each country on its own. The world became a united place of lands that use (and need) eachother to live. And if Americans still only learn about their own country and how to be proud of it, it effects the communication between other continentals which causes lots of issues around the world.
Just my thought, but a little knowledge about whats going on around you can do many good.
Computer games don't affect kids. I mean, if Pac-Man had affected us as kids, we would all be running around darkened rooms, munching magic pills, and listening to repetitive electronic music.
I have lived in Australia at various periods of my life. Most recently between August 2005-August 2006. And one of the main reasons why I have recently returned to England is the horrifying lack of global awareness that was prevalent in all areas of society. England offers so much more -ves overall, but one of the few +ves here is that there is a fairly large portion of society who sees further than the tips of their noses. This cannot be said, in my experience, of Australians, generally. Melbourne is a wonderful city in terms of cost of living, employment opportunities and a low crime rate but the denizens are invariably narrow minded and quite ignorant of world events in comparison with their european counterparts. The Australian media institutions were generally blatantly partisan and unable to do justice to the news theu covered. Australia is much more more like America than anywhere I have been or lived in Europe. The most open minded, intelligent people I came across in Australia were all Kiwis.
Obviously I am not saying that all Aussies are dumb, that would be ridiculously short sighted but as I have lived in that country for a fair few years, in various places, and also lived in Europe for many years I am in a position to make an accurate comparison.
My brother, who has lived in Melbourne all his life, agreed with most of my criticisms and I agreed with most of his defences which revolved around the general easiness of living in Australia.
I may end up back there at some point in the future because existence is piss easy compared to life here in the (F)UK and there are plenty of Kiwis around with which I can debate the hard and more intellectually advanced aspects of Life
We have far more nasty bastards here in England, a ludicrously expensive way of life, devious and hard hitting taxation, a spiralling crime rate, but on the other hand we do have a half decent group of media institutions and a relatively large % of society who are at least partially aware of the current global picture.
No insult is aimed here at Australians. I myself am an Aussie citizen, no way more proud of my Aussie passport than my British passport and there is much to be said for the way of life Down Under.
The dilemma I feel that I personally face is this:>
Australian society is embrassingly insular in mentality but British society is fearsomely nasty and cold, so where the fuck do I settle. That is if settling down is my aim rather than my percieved obligation.
The king of generalisations!

Belgium's a country?!
lol
pleae tell me that was sarcasm
Please tell me you could infer that it obviously was without having to ask
But Animal, I kind of see your point.. But am I correct that if you live life like the way it is, enjoys it the way it is and by enableing to ignore criminal statuses and global media problems you can have a perfect, restful and stoner way of living settled down in Australia. Speaking about one of the most modern places on earth containing a sunshine for life- climate. In comparisation to places as Afrika or South Amercia it seems way more approachable for european people to live. Where employment is easily earned and a peaceful state of living there is also easy to achieve. Am I correct saying this? Cause if so.. I'm seriously thinking of moving to Australia and find a job there after finishing my study. Please comment (can also use PM for being too off topic)

haha and i am one of them... haha! thanks animal
but yeah i understand your argument, and this is true... reflecting upon my own posting, i believe i was confined in my thinking, as i was only considering my social circle, which consist of at maximum three or four aussies (one of which lives in Lyon and another in Stuttgart presently)... The rest are from Asian countries, a couple from UK and a couple from NZ...
While we have all lived here, i realised we do all make a concentrated effort to realised what is going on in the rest of the world. However i do believe that Australia is far more diverse and tolerating of other culutres, their information, and their beliefs than America. While not perfect.. there is still a lot of positives for living in OZ, Melbourne in particular...
