theres a thin line between mocking and down right insulting and provoking, and those cartoons crossed it.

dude have you seen the cartoons its not that serious nothing worth killing people over. people constantly make fun of other religions and powerful figures but you dont see anyone rioting and killing over it. Muslims seem to have a solution to everything and that solution seems to be violence.

This is exactly what those cartoons say. By depicting Muhammad with a bomb for a turban, you say that Islam is a terrorist religion. That is not 'mocking' Islam, it is insulting Islam. The only difference with other picturings of religious figures is that muslims are standing up for their belief. Did you know that the word Islam means 'peace' in Arabic?

You don't see me running around saying that Christians solve everything with violence, do you? As I recall, Bush said prior to the invasion of Iraq that God spoke to him and said war was the only solution. Does that make Christianity a belligerent religion? Does that make Jesus a prophet of war?

You also seem to be missing the peaceful protests against the cartoons. Only a few thousand muslims have resorted to violence thus far, yet you seem to be convinced that over a billion muslims are violent rioters. It's shortsightedness like that, on both sides, that stir all the hatred between the West and the Middle East.

Some people need to start making a difference between a religion and those abusing it for their own agendas. I do not condone violence in any way, and neither do the lionshare of muslims.

And FYI, picturing the prophet Muhammad, whether in a cartoon or otherwise, is an insult towards Islam. So you can imagine the feelings muslims get when their prophet is not only pictured, but pictured as a terrorist.

Doc, i certainly dont agree that the Muslim approach to any problems is violence..but also i dont agree with this protective shell which seems valid for some religions, but not others...

do all you people really think this is about fucking cartoons???5 or 6 countries up in arms and shooting embassies because of cartooons solely???

that is wrong.
It is almost amusing but also true that the hatred towards the WEST is very widespread as is the West's hatred for other areas ,namely the middle east. While we may not accept that this hate is within our own pysche/soul, unfortunately we dont run our countries, so in effect the middle east often ses the Uk or the US as a bunch of tony Blairs or george Bushs or worse still a gang of berlesconis lol...which is eactly the same dumbness that many westerners subscribe to i.e. the see the Iranian Pm or Hussein or Bin Laden as equae whole groups of people with these individuals pyschopaths..,.

the blatant shock value of the cartoons, is not the drawings themselves but the ease of which so many countries took up this common thread as a justifiable vent for their shared hatred of the West.

we shoudlnt be saying 'theyre fucking mad, kiling folk over cartoons' moreover we should be screaming at our leaders
'Look what is happening ,you pigfuckers, YOu are directly responsible for creating enough valid hatred/badn energy that it only takes a cartoon to push people over that line from thinking they hate the West to running round the streest with a ak47 shooting the sky and screaming at the top of your voice'death to the infidels'...

some of the demonstrations that I saw in the Uk were stupid, some extremists walking thru london with banners saying 'BEHEAD ALL WHO INSULT ALLAH'... That attitude is not the widespread muslim feeling, if it was there would be even less peace than we can grasp at now...if i were a legal man in that arena i would be arrestting all people whop make threats like that, because they need education(not prison) arested to be educated about british law maybe some new charge like that...this is a seperate but linked problem altogether.. the idea that your own relgiious law is moe valid than the legal law of the land...

anyway to say that muslims are victimized is wrong, in my mind, as is the suggestion that christians arent ever mocked.. they are constantly mocked.. you can walk around the streets in most major european countries wearing thsirts with the popes image printed with a reefer and the caption 'the pope smokes dope'.. more can be found very easily. all religions are mocked at varios times buty in the Uk i would say that no religion is attacked for coemdyvalue more than any other,,,

so what is the difference between mass produced t shirts saying 'the pope smokes dope' and the muhammed cartooons??

im not saying that all muslims are violent but you cant deny that they constantly provoke it and cause themselves to be seen as a violent people. any religion that sees it acceptable to kill children has some very serious problems.

although the many powerful governments exploit the middle east i think you dont have a complete grasp on America's general view of the middle east. i have never met an american that hates the middle east and those who hate arabs do it with the belief that they were responsible for 9/11. wether that is true or not arabs are blamed for the attack and the deaths.

its not that americans hate the middle east its that they dont give a crap, then the govt gives the people a reason to hate it, then the govt exploits the shit out of it.

when you say 'they' doc it sounds like you're speaking about all muslims as a whole, and if you are, which i dont think you are, then well i have to wonder what kind of muslims, and how many , you have met in your life so far???i mean how do yoget from the troubles to casting traits to whole religions??

i mean maybe i'm wrong. I still have to read the Koran at some point, the sooner the btter probably as an understanding of the pillars of the islamic belief is essential when trying to make sense of these issues..

so, sorry doc if your use of 'they' was a stoned lack of effort.... :) amd if that was the case, then scrap most of the above please..

Docgreenthumb you are one ignorant guy. There are 1.2 Billion Muslims in the world, out of that there are maybe a million or less terrorists or ones that promote violence. So because the KKK are Christian and promote the killing of people who arent white, does this mean that all or most Christians are racists. The Qu'ran doesnt promote Violence. You could do with some education on Islam before you judge it.

Show me the passage in the Quran that says it is acceptable to kill children, as I seem to have completely missed that.

I've seen a show in which a reporter asked some random American people on the streets about their views on the Middle East, and quite a few gave answers like "Kill them all.", "We should convert them to Christianity." and "Stupid towelheads." No hate you say?

weedguru_animal raises a good point. This violence is not about the cartoons. Look at the nations where the protesting turned to widespread rioting. All those nations have governments or radical groups that have everything to gain from all this hatred to the West. Iran, Afghanistan, Lebanon, Syria, Pakistan etc. This causes me to believe that the rioting is not spontaneous, but organised. Many of the protesters arrested in Beirut were Syrians. What are they doing there? Travelling hundreds of miles for a peaceful protest, that they could have done at home as well?

i know the quran doesnt promote violence but when the twin towers went down muslims had mass celebrations all over the middle east. and althought muslims may say the quran doesnt promote violence there are still millions of terrorist killing women and children all over the world. as for the reference to the KKK, they did give Christianity a bad name but they also didnt go around killing millions of people.

what i may have said may have been a bit rash but when i think about all the parts in the world that are in serious conflict and how often muslims terrorist are involved i have a problem with hearing how islam does not promote violence. maybe the quran doesnt but the society surely does. terrorist bombers are praised and there family is taken care of by the rest of the community.

then the muslims (not just the terrorist) go off aout this cartoon. they not only protest it but kill people and blow things up. no matter what the quran says if your first reaction to something is to go riot and blow things up there is a problem. especially when journalist have been criticizing political and religious figures since the beginning of time.

even if there is a deeper issue doesnt mean that its right to kill people over a cartoon. that doesnt necesarily mean i think the cartoon should have been released but the way 'they' reacted is horrible and doesnt do a good job at making islam look like a peaceful religion.

First of all;

I realise that alot of the members here are religious in some way (maybe not actively as in church going, but still do 'believe' in their own personal way) SO im not here to piss them off, or take a piss at them

In my very humble opinion I find that religion is dumb, something that some deluted demented caveman wrote thousands of years ago ignites the riots we see today.

The difference between cults and religions? Religions have millions of believers.

Right now all I can think of is the people out their causing havoc over some lines someone drew on a piece of paper. Theyre ready to start a fucking war over this, why? Cause some guy called muhammed gets depicted as someone that discriminates women, and is generally being laughed at.

The muslims know jack shit about human rights, women in their religion are inferior to men, women can't even choose what they wear.

All i'm saying is that i'm fucking sick and tired of all this religion bullshit (and i mean ALL religions, im not a racist/ i dont discriminate)

Those 'people' need to grow a brain and do it fast, or just shoot themselves in the head . Good riddance

sorry if i came over stupid, close minded or pissed anybody off

Im an atheist and always will be

Question:
"is there a god?"

answer:

"no"

Computer games don't affect kids. I mean, if Pac-Man had affected us as kids, we would all be running around darkened rooms, munching magic pills, and listening to repetitive electronic music.

Muslims don't kill "millions of people" and there are not "millions of terrorists". In fact christians have killed more muslims than the other way around. Mass celebration? A few thousand people came onto the streets, and most of them were paid to do so.

And again, you're generalising. First off, drawing, let alone mocking, Muhammad is a grave insult towards muslims. And just because we picture other prophets doesn't mean we should provoke Islam with derogatory mockings of their prophet. And why can't they protest? Doesn't the West preach freedom of speech? Muslims are merely exercising that freedom. The outbursts of violence are incited, not spontaneous. They're not a matter of religion, but a matter of politics. The people behind them are using this anger for their cause.

well all i can do is respect your opinion doesnt mean i agree with it.

when i said millions of death i was refering to the numerous terrorist attacks and car bombings all over the world. as for how many terrorist there are i have no idea i just took that from fresh whyte's post. as for the violence being incited and the people being paid how could you possibly know that? and how was it incited if they were throwing explosives at the embassy. i understand that thing get out of hand when riots are going on but it still gives the rioters a bad name same as it has for blacks in the US.

even though the danish provoked this in a way the muslim community could go about it in a better way. i know there was already tension between the muslims and this newspaper(or whatever it was) the world still sees it as them blowing up over a cartoon. no matter which way you cut it this is what happened and it gives a bad perception of them to the rest of the world.

So why think like the rest of the world? Have your own opinions. Dont judge because you dont know. Atleast learn about it
