How do you turn your crop into smokable stuff?

Hi,
I was wondering how someones know firstly when the plant is done growing and reading for smoking, and then how do you turn the plant into the stuff that one would buy off the street?? Like I have no idea. Do just chop evrything up, even the stems, leaves and stuff, and then just grind it all up and that's it - ready to smoke?? Could somone please fill me in on the cultivating stage for the plant - AFTER the plant is done growing...
