Southern Cali would be a great place to grow weed, there is lots of sun and warm temperatures.
The best type of soil is the darkest possible. No clay, sand or rocky soil.
From my experience the worst mistake at the beginning is to put germinated seeds directly into the ground. Have them grow up in a pot first so they will be strong enough to survive the hazards of mother nature. If you insist on growing directly in the ground, don't do it in the soil that is there. Dig a hole and fill it with good quality store bought soil like pro-mix. Normal ground soil is usually to hard and difficult for the roots of a tiny plant to work their way through.
